That seems egregiously oversimplified. People in the top 1/3 at T14s strike out every year, and not just because of bad luck or bergers. Some people don't mass mail and just rely on OCI, some people are mediocre interviewers and don't try and remedy it, some people target tough and/or small markets (e.g. DC), etc, etc.

Sorry, let me rephrase that. The people I spoke to (4 different students, individually) said that if you want NYC big law, then you wanna be top third to all but guarantee it. Some said 95%, others didn't say a percentage. I didn't ask about DC, specifically, but each said that would be more difficult.

Top 1/3 to clinch it, top 1/4... they're just guessing and at a school that doesn't release rank they might both be talking about the same GPA. But as Bk said that's terribly oversimplified. You would be shocked how high a GPA a person can have and only have one offer. Which is one offer away from 0.

If you're Republican go to DC, if Democrat go to Chicago.

Good luck!

Ya, GULC student, they echoed that because the class size is as large as it is, one has to be in the top 25-30 for a good shot. I imagine there are exceptions to this of course, but I don't have any direct experience.

Sorry, let me clarify: top 30 percent for major market, top 20 to 25 percent for D.C. (but D.C. is tough to crack in general).

Interesting. None of them said top third for a "good shot." They used top third as more of a qualifier for if you want to basically be guaranteed big law, as much as guarantee can mean when you're talking about something like this. They all agreed you have a decent shot if you're around median, but it's a gamble. Some said uphill battle, some said good shot, and some said decent. The median opinions were what seemed to vary. Top third opinion didn't.

What year student are you, if you don't mind me asking?

He/she said "comfortable," (re: the top 30 percent), I'm sorry if the term "good shot" was misleading, that's just how I thought about it in my head. Of course, as some other posters have noted, nothing's exactly guaranteed. It makes sense though--top 1/3 out of ~550 students is 165, which falls in line with the big law employment numbers. I know a lot of students don't even bother with big law and go the pi/gov route, but I wonder how many were fighting for those jobs.

ETA: will be a 1L next year, weighing GULC/NU heavily

Rly? Not as far as actual political preferences and demographics are concerned. D.C. is more blue.

Right, like Barack Obama and his entire democratic cabinet?

Oh, I see. Yeah, good shot means something different to you than it does to me I guess haha. Thanks for clarifying.

yeah, the only right wing people around would probably be the tourists visiting the national mall...everyone else is just happy to be a whore for status and power in whatever form they find it.
