Can LRAPs change before one graduates?

Postby linkx13 » Fri Nov 15, 2013 1:42 pm

Hey all quick question regarding something I wondered about:

Can a law school's LRAP terms change before a student graduates, thereby possibly negatively affecting financial situations for graduates, or are students expected to be "grandfathered in" to the program as it was when they accepted?

Possible changes include: lowering max amount of income, changing the percentage of loan payments covered, decreasing the amount of time to enroll in the program, etc.

Yes, it happened at my law school. And because of the availability of PSLF, schools began to modify their plans around that program. Should the applicant pool continue to decline, look to law schools to reduce LRAP benefits.

Unlikely to happen negatively at top schools with tons of money, especially because the out of pocket cost for schools post-PAYE is significantly lower than pre-PAYE.

That said, if congress pulls the rug out from underneath all the PI kids, you're buggered.
