Duke vs Cornell

Post by jusman26 » Tue Aug 06, 2013 6:42 pm

Quick opinion question/searching to see if ya'll have any ideas that I haven't thought of yet.

I'm deciding between Duke and Cornell for this upcoming semester. They are both offering 15k a year for each year. I would like to work in NYC after I graduate. I feel like according to the statistics I've seen, both place very similarly. I've already gone to Cornell for undergrad, and if all things were equal, I'd rather not go back.

Anyone think one is substantially better than the other? If not I am going with Duke. Thanks all!

It always makes me laugh that Cornell graduates are very much disinterested in the idea of spending another three years in upstate New York. ;)

Yeah, go to Duke.

If you don't like Ithaca Duke is a good choice. They are essentially peer schools so do what you'd prefer.

Cornell's OIC will be much more geared to NY.

"I would like to work in NYC after I graduate."

This is what you should be focusing on. I would go with Cornell.

I feel like I've read this exact same OP and made this exact same comment a couple times on TLS but I'm gonna do it again:

wtf happens in Ithaca?

Nothing. Plus gunners, I'm guessing.

I know you're just kidding around but nah, stuff happens, and we're all nice.

But as much as I love the place, spending 7 years there does seem like a bit much. I don't blame him for wanting a change of scenery if all else is equal.

Was quasi-kidding, and only talking about the UG. And that was based on the whopping total of one person I know who went there.

The TLs C/O 2016 contingent there does seem very chill and sociable. I do think that iMisto bailing for Berkeley is a beautiful (in a tragic way) metaphor for Cornell and Ithaca. Also FWIW if I didn't have a SO (and their job) to think of I would have been all about Cornell. I'm a big fan and think I would really like it there.

Yeah, I kind of realized afterward that you were referring to the UG, but it doesn't really make sense to me for OP to judge the law school based on the UG.

And if you look at my post in the 1L thread, you'll see it's not just the TLS contingent at Cornell that's chill and sociable.

Duke, easily. It has a much stronger reputation and I would say after a few more years in Ithaca your perspective will become skewed by a total of 7 years living there.

Also, I don't have any proof of this but just basing it off my intuition from experience, I believe recruiters might be a bit more hesitant when they see someone who has spent 7 years studying in a small town when considering if they could fit in well into the high-paced climate of biglaw and the surrounding cities biglaw inhabits.

Communicate now with those who not only know what a legal education is, but can offer you worthy advice and commentary as you complete the three most educational, yet challenging years of your law related post graduate life.

Have there been small town people in the past that did excessively poorly at OCI?

1) Much stronger reputation where? In the South? Ok. In NYC? No way.
2) Durham isn't a small town?
3) Classes have already started. OP made his choice already.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?
