Patent Law School Programs

Post by calman » Tue May 31, 2005 10:46 am

I was wondering what are some of the best patent law programs. Are there any rankings available for patent law schools?

Best Patent Law Programs

There are no law school rankings just focusing upon patent law. However, US News does rank the best intellectual property ("IP") law school programs and because patent law is one of the main components of an intellectual property program, along with copyright and trademark law, the rankings for the best IP programs is the best proxy for the best patent programs.

As expected, the best programs are with law schools in Silicon Valley, with Boalt (my alma mater) being the clear leader and Stanford Law School being the second best in the nation. Additionally, Santa Clara Law School has Professor Chisum, one of the foremost figures in patent law.

1. University of California–Berkeley
2. Stanford University (CA)
3. George Washington University (DC)

Other excellent patent law programs are at NYU, Franklin Pierce University, UCLA, Columbia, Santa Clara University and the University of Houston.

Ken, my score is going to be somewhere aroung 158 on feb 10 test. I am craving for Patent law schools... but I guess I can afford only Buffalo with this score in NY, right? Do you know Buffalo's program? Any other choice for me?

If you don't mind not being in NY there are other schools you can look at. One I know of is University of Dayton. They have a specialised curriculum track in Intellectual Property and Patent Law.

For others, the best patent law schools in the US are:

Berkeley/Boalt
Stanford
NYU
Santa Clara
Franklin Pierce
Columbia

I don't think so. I think old TLS just had very few posters so no one had experience to answer some of the questions except Ken

An "In memoriam" thread for decade-old threads could be so fun. And sad. Very sad.
