T6 $ vs. T14 $$ vs. T20$$$
Hello
I'm going to law school. I am from Minnesota and would like to practice in the Twin Cities afterwards. Not sure what specifically I want to do yet, but leaning toward "big law" (Minneapolis standards) as a starting point.
Options/Offers:
Chicago=30k
Mich= 1/3 tuition
Duke= half tuition
U Minn= full tuition.
The metric we're using is some ratio of career prospects to debt (Though I can't conceptualize either).
I suspect that I'll be happy at any of them, as I am a happy fella. I understand that I'm pretty lucky to have these choices, and I am greatly appreciative of anyone willing to take the time to weigh in. Thanks

If youre deadset on the Twin Cities, Minn seems like a no brainer

This but only if you are DEADSET. If you are only leaning towards practicing in Minn you should really take the Chicago offer and run with it.dr123 wrote:If youre deadset on the Twin Cities, Minn seems like a no brainer

if you got the same MN scholly i did then it gives you quite a CoL allowance. i am in state and got offered 52k for the first year while tuition for me is in the 30s.....seems like the CoA number you give is a bit high

On the other hand, going to Chicago will get you a very high probability of a high paying job, whether in your desired market or not. Your call on how you want to trade off higher debt for higher probability of getting a high paying job.

Thanks everybody
Congrats on the offer! My deal is just tuition... I figure I need ~18k a year: 12 for food other bullshit, 6 for prostitutes.paulinaporizkova wrote:if you got the same MN scholly i did then it gives you quite a CoL allowance. i am in state and got offered 52k for the first year while tuition for me is in the 30s.....seems like the CoA number you give is a bit high
I know... I've just heard that unless you're top 10-15% at Minn, the largest firms (Dorsey/Faegre) are off the table. Minn is an awesome school and the most highly regarded in the market, but Billy Mitchell and St. Thomas grads can hold their own when competing for jobs, and a good chunk of people want to come back to the cities from T14s.dr123 wrote:If youre deadset on the Twin Cities, Minn seems like a no brainer

Thanks Hannibal. I've been perusing that one. It seems there's no wrong choice between U Chi and U Minn, so I will base my decision solely on the poll- 0L's votes count double...

Chicago - even if you have lower grades there, you'll still probably beat out high performing Minn students in their own legal market. Also opens your options for every other state in the US, if you so choose to take your skillz elsewhere (you know... if Minn economy tanks somehow or if you find a prostitute in Florida whom you really adore)jerries wrote:I figure I need ~18k a year: 12 for food other bullshit, 6 for prostitutes.

Good find michigan_man. I think the commentary is more valuable than the poll.

Minny is exactly where you want to practice. Def take that up. Chicago would be the choice for anywhere else but the Twin Cities. Save yourself a needless waste of 120K and go for the debt-wise option in your market of choice.

Seriously, go to Minnesota.
I know plenty of people who have gone to UMN and plenty who have gone to Billy, there is no comparison while job hunting or otherwise. You simply won't be competing with the vast majority of people from there or St. Thomas.
$120k difference in debt is ENORMOUS and beyond ridiculous if you are set on the Twin Cities. If you wanted Chicago or NYC the choice would be difficult, but you don't, so it's not.
Enjoy your nearly free T20 lawl school education.

If you absolutely want MN BigLaw -> don't go to Minnesota
If you just want to work in MN -> go to Minnesota
If you just want to work in MN -> go to Minnesota
