Santa Clara or Chicago Kent

Post by Crazzzybudha » Fri Mar 18, 2011 12:15 pm

Chicago Kent and Santa Clara are the two I'm really considering. First seat deposit is a few weeks away and I'm too broke to pay both. So this is it, time to make the decision that will determine the course of the rest of my life! No pressure. I'd appreciate any input.

Santa Clara and Chicago Kent both have great IP programs, something I'm interested in. With scholarships, I'd be paying (just about) the same price at both schools. Chicago Kent has the advantage of having a really good legal writing program (or at least they promote it as such) which makes me feel a little more confident about going to the school and deciding not to go into IP. Santa Clara is in Silicon Valley, so lots of IP firms, good jobs, etc. Kent is higher ranked than Santa Clara (SCU=84, Kent=61) but I'm not too concerned with rank, mostly with which school I will be able to get a good job after graduation.

I also assume that it is easiest to get your first job in the area around where you went to law school. This translates into if I went to Santa Clara I would plan on living in the Bay Area for a couple years after graduation, and same for Kent, for a total of 5+ years in the area including law school. I would probably be a permanent resident, because that's how things go. That being said, I really like the Bay Area, that is my preferred location, Chicago is really nice too, but I'm done and tired of winters.

Thanks!

You prefer the Bay Area so go to Santa Clara.

However neither of these schools are going to give you a leg up in IP hiring.
