Opinions of Emory
I have seen many different attitudes toward Emory, both positive and negative. What should I know to make an informed decision on whether or not to go here?

Re: Opinions of Emory
I don't pretend to know anything about Emory. I will say that when I told my boss I was considering applying she told me not to bother. Her son graduated from there and she said that it was the biggest waste of money, that he learned nothing and that they do nothing to help their students get internships or jobs.
It is just one opinion though. I'd visit and talk to current students and recent alumni before making a decision.

Re: Opinions of Emory
I thought there would be more responses to this since posts asking for Emory vs. anywhere else usually generate quite a bit of feeling towards the school. Anyone with these opinions care to comment?

Re: Opinions of Emory
Supposedly, Emory got crushed last OCI. We'll see what the new numbers look like when the new NLJ250 rankings come out.

Has there been any indication of when these numbers are going to be coming out?

OP: It may help if you offer reasons why you are considering Emory Law School.

Re: Opinions of Emory
I'm an Emory 1L and I'm very happy here so far.
My career adviser has been pretty helpful, 1L Spring OCI had around 12 unique employers, with some of them interviewing for multiple offices, and the school also participates in a PI and Government career fair with all the other GA law schools. I also know a few people around median who will be working for federal judges, and I know others with firm jobs lined up...I don't know what their grades are or the size of the firms though.
As far as the people go, I couldn't be happier. Most of them are very nice and helpful (everyone in my section is always sharing outlines and good hypos/practice problems). There's definitely a "we're all this together" vibe rather than a "cut throat" vibe. They're fun to hang out with too!! People kind of take turns having people over/inviting people to go out somewhere. When I'm not stressed, it's a fun place to be. And when I am stressed, there's always someone around who will try to make me feel better.
Overall, it's a good place to be and I'm glad I decided to go to school here.

Re: Opinions of Emory
2L Emory student here. Emory got crushed in 3L OCI... as did every other T20-30 school. Ours was just more publicized.
2L OCI went fine, and the general feeling is our class did as expected in this economy. Students in Top 30% were competitive. Some students hovering below top third got SAs, even some students at median who networked their asses off pulled some surprising offers. Of course there are also students in the top 33-25% who still have nothing (paying at least) or got an offer from a firm lower than their expectations. that is life and that is expected ITE at a T20-30, so don't kid yourself otherwise. A lot of the student body here has a hefty scholarship, so not all is bleak if you did not get a great offer for 2L summer. After speaking with a lot of alumni, there are good opportunities to get hired at respectable firms during 3L ( though not through OCI and most likely not a NALP firm).
I dont know what the above poster's boss is talking about. Emory has a field placement program in Atlanta that places students each semester in all fields (ex: Coca-Cola legal dept, AT&T legal dept, Atlanta Hawks and Thrashers ( NBA and NHL teams) legal dept, 3 different counties DA or PD offices, federal agencies (FAA, Federal Defender, FHA, etc), and tons of clerkships, etc. See http://www.law.emory.edu/academics/acad ... ogram.html for more details.
Likely the Boss' son either a) did not bother to apply to the field placements b) did not have good grades c) had unreasonable expectations or d) all of the above.
I am not advocating that Emory is top dog. You can make valid arguments for UGA having equal or better placement in Atlanta than Emory. Also Vandy,Duke, UVA are more highly thought of in the Southeast than Emory. But Emory is a solid school, it can get you up and down the coast, and if you work hard, put yourself out there to make meaningful connections/internship opportunities, you will do fine.
Law school career services is not meant to spoon-feed you jobs regardless of the school you attend. You got to earn it and put the leg work in. Good luck with your decision.
