BU (sticker) vs. Cardozo (96k)

Post by js77 » Thu Feb 24, 2011 9:27 am

Just accepted to BU, not anticipating any type of scholly. Also in at Cardozo with 96k scholly.

From the Boston area, family ties, etc. are all here.

COA at Cardozo will increase debt regardless of scholly there.

Does ranking supercede debt in this case? I am under the impression that BU places far better in Boston than Cardozo will place in NYC.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Can you save on COA costs by living with family near BU?

If so, this is a no brainer.

If not, I'm not sure BU is worth full COA. Take a year off and retake to get a scholarship there?

Retaking isn't an option for me at this point, but living near family is certainly going to mitigate some costs that I would not be afforded living in NYC.

What is the stipulation on your Cardozo scholarship?

Bear in mind that not only does BU place better in Boston than Dozo in NYC, but BU also places better in NYC than Dozo in NYC.
BU at sticker isn't that awful of a thing.

While the first part of your statement is probably true, or at least plausibly true, the second part isn't. BU at sticker is a terrible investment, even with family nearby to mitigate costs. Unless you have literally no employment prospects right now, I would advise against it. Actually, even if you do have no prospects and no hope, I would advise moving to Asia and teaching English for a couple of years (and learning the local language, to give yourself a marketable skill).

What do you hope to get out of law school? Why are you aiming to go? Far from idle questions, these delve directly to the core of the matter: if your answer to either is to improve your financial situation, you should reconsider your plan.

BU will negotiate scholarships, give it a shot. COL in NYC is crazy high, and if you can save on it in Boston b/c of family, a small scholarship of 10k/15k a year might make these two comparable.

Also, Dozo will negotiate scholarships, I had a friend turn the 96k Scholarship w/ strings into 96k+housing w/out strings.

I am not as debt adverse as most TLSers but FWIW I would take Bu at sticker.

+1. I think its worth it. you are still going to come out of cardozo with 100k of debt since they quote their COA somewhere around 70k/year and the BU degree will take you so much further.

I think this is a no-brainer for BU. You should have good prospects in Boston coming out of BU.

Does anyone think BU would match an offer to a school with similar rank (Emory), but is not necessarily a peer school in terms of location, etc?

I received a 67k scholarship from Emory today, and am wondering if this matters in the context of BU's potential scholarship...

I'd say probably no but it is certainly worth a try. Real lawyers negotiate.

Emory probably doesnt carry too much weight in terms of leverage power since so far theyve given out scholarships to nearly everyone. Its still worth a shot. Last year there were some success stories of negotiating with BU, but so far everyone whos tried this year has been shot down (even someone with 105k at GW). It might be worth it to wait just a little longer to attempt to negotiate.

My thoughts on the matter are that either way BU places better in the market that Cardozo specifically targets (NYC). So Cardozo scholly - COA = somewhat of a wash?

Doesnt retaking lead to the same decision down the road? Even if he does better, he will have to choose between something like BU full scholly or Cornell/GULC/Michigan sticker. Then he should retake again to do even better and have to decide between GULC/Cornell/Michigan fully scholly or CCN sticker, etc etc
The TLS response would be similar, but BU with $$$ or T14 sticker are both smart options. The 2 current offers are not.

I kinda agree especially if OP only wants to do big law. But BU still gets 25% of class into BigLaw if im not mistaken.
30% for c/o 2010 (which was the worst year, hopefully), 35% for c/o 2009. So it isn't an absolutely horrible investment.
