Villanova Law (VLS) - 1L Perspective

Post by NovaLaw2013 » Sat Feb 19, 2011 5:58 pm

To any prospective Villanova Law students out there -

I am a villanova 1L and I recommend villanova very highly, especially if you are someone with the numbers to get a scholarship. I chose Villanova over some Top 30 schools largely because they gave me a great scholarship and I could not be happier about my decision.

The professors at VLS are incredible, almost without exception, and I don't say that lightly. I went to a top school for undergrad and had some great professors, but the VLS faculty is tremendous. The students are also wonderful. They are very intelligent and tend to have come from excellent undergrads (NYU, Penn, UVA, BC, etc.). Many also have impressive prior work experience in everything from finance to engineering. More importantly, the environment is friendly and collegial. People are competitive, but not annoyingly so.

I have also been impressed with the career opportunities and alumni. It's rough to be a 3L anywhere right now, and obviously you want to be the guy or gal with good grades, but the 1L class has already lined up some very impressive work for this summer. Some students have even landed big firm jobs, which is unheard of for 1Ls most places. Crucially, the alumni are very active with the school and play a dominant role in the Philly/DE/NJ firms. The alumni have donated a ton of money to the school recently, and as a result we have a gorgeous facility (maybe the best in the country), resources to poach top faculty, and an abundance of free food.

The most common complaint among 1L's is that there are no paper towels in the bathrooms - something to do with our LEED certification supposedly. If you can deal with that, come to Villanova. I recommend it highly.

First, I don't believe you are a 1L. Second, your analysis doesn't take into account the horrible PR hit Villanova just took for lying to the ABA about the quality of incoming students. In any case, your attitude is consistent with a culture that would overstates the merits of the school.

The PR hit won't mean much in greater Philadelphia (which is Villanova's primary market), but otherwise I agree.

Nova needs a rep boost with continued speculation of a dip in both rankings and employment. I guess this is how they chose to do it.
