Realistic Expectations

Post by DeFilippis13 » Tue Feb 09, 2010 4:10 am

Alright, need your help out there...

161, 3.84. 8-year Marine Corps vet (still on active duty). DGI: University of Maryland University College (almost all online). Did complete one year at Wisconsin (3.94). WI resident.

Okay, so I have been accepted to Baylor ($$$), Penn State ($$), Syracuse, and Louisville, waitlisted at Wisconsin, and rejected at UVA (Shocker!). I am still waiting to hear from ASU, UNC, William & Mary, Minnesota, UIUC, and UT. I will be using the GI Bill and Yellow Ribbon, so basically UNC is ($$), UIUC is ($$$), UT is ($$$), MN is ($$$), William & Mary is ($$), and ASU is ($$$). The GI Bill also makes PSU ($$$), same with Syracuse.

I already know that I am going back into the Marine Corps as a JAG, so job prospects are not a concern for me. Right now I am leaning heavy on PSU (Carlisle) (wife is from PA, job market is good for her, and houses are cheap). So, the only schools that would change that are UNC and UIUC. Do any of you think I should wait to hear from them or am I wasting my time? The waitlist at Wiscy makes me think it ain’t going to happen. I am thinking my DGI is really hurting my chances. Normally I would just wait it out, but I need to make a decision soon because the homebuyers tax credit deadline is coming quick (April 30). Plus I need to move my wife there so she can find a job.

I would assume it still matters. He probably won't be doing JAG forever.

Well, by the time I finish the initial service obligation, I would be at around 14 or 15 years time in service, so I will most likely serve out the rest to get that pension. I figure with 10+ years of JAG experience, my law school will not be much a factor in my future employment hunt. However, I do want the best legal education I can afford. I owe it to myself. I am just curious to see if you all think I have a realistic shot at UNC. Oh, I crunched the MGIB numbers wrong, UIUC is only ($$), so I think that is going to remove it from the running. Thanks.

UNC says it wants to have all acceptances out by March 1st this year, but its history suggests you may be waiting into May just to find out what the decision is. They're probably going to do what they did last year and WL just about everyone because so many people do accept their offers of admission. Since time seems to be of the essence, I don't know if UNC is going to get you an answer (whatever the answer may be) before your deadline. As far as you being admitted, you seem to be OOS which suggests a higher threshold for admission but I think your service is a soft they will really like (since UNC is all about giving back to the community). So I won't make a call on that. Good luck with whatever you decide to do. :)

LSP has you at strong consider, add in your service and it seems like you should have a decent shot.
