SUNY Buffalo vs Hofstra

Post by minoo66 » Mon Feb 08, 2010 12:08 am

For me, financially, I have equal scholarship/grant money, and I am interested in entertainment law. Is their ranking difference very big? Do people respect one more than the other? Any/all advice is appreciated!!

Hofstra definitely has more of a reputation. It is actually one of those that people in general probably think is better than it actually is. There are a lot of Hofstra grads working in NYC Biglaw, but I wouldn't count on that ITE. If you have equal money, I think Hofstra is your best bet, unless you are planning on working upstate. That said, the COL would probably be a big factor for me, which should be significantly less at SUNY. Good luck.

I'd vote UB. I'm guessing you received a very large scholarship at Hofstra since everything is equal, but it's probably contingent on remaining in the top 40 percent of your class. If you lose that scholarship than your stuck with a tremendous amount of debt and it will be difficult paying it off without getting a big paying job. Atleast if you go to UB you don't have the pressure of keeping your schol. and even if you do if you lose it atleast tuition is much cheaper. Also UB is in a much less saturated job market than Hofstra which is competing with all the big city schools plus the other T2, T3s, and T4s in NY. I can't speak much about either environmental law programs but based on everything else considered I'd go with UB.
