Summer Clerkship Program

Job Profile: Students who have completed two years of law school are eligible to appear in court under Rule 321. Students who have completed one year of law school are eligible to appear in court under Rule 322.


Allegheny County District Attorney's Office is currently offering a Summer Clerkship Program for law students interested in public service and criminal law. This program provides hands-on experience and an opportunity to work in various units within the Office, including Homicide. The program will begin accepting applications on January 5, 2025 and will close on March 3, 2025.

General Internship Program Information:

- The internship program is administered by Assistant District Attorney Sarah Weikart.
- All students participating in the summer program are expected to work 15-20 hours per week.
- Paid positions require 20 hours per week.
- The DA's Office participates in the Allegheny County Bar Association Summer Clerkship Program for 1Ls.
- On Campus Interviews (OCIs) are available for law students at certain schools.
- Non-OCI applicants can apply by submitting a cover letter and resume via email.
- Undergraduate students can also apply for credit positions.
- All applications must be submitted by the specified deadline.

Intern Duties:

- Legal research and writing (briefs, memoranda, pre- and post-trial motions, etc.).
- Some clerical duties, copying, redacting, etc.
- Assisting attorneys in trial and hearing preparation.
- Accompanying attorneys to plea negotiations, jury selection, pre-trial motions, and trials (Jury and Non-Jury).

Certified Legal Interns:

- In addition to the above duties, certified interns may appear in court on behalf of the Commonwealth under the direct supervision of an Assistant District Attorney.
- Eligible students can gain valuable courtroom experience before finishing law school.
- Students who have completed two years of law school can appear in court under Bar Admission Rule 321, while those who have completed one year can appear under Rule 322.

Salary Information:

- Paid positions require 20 hours per week.
- Non-paid positions may be available for credit.
- Undergraduate students must be approved to receive credit from their school.
- Certified Legal Interns may receive a stipend.
