Should I play Sudoku to help improve my LG?

Post by notaznguy » Mon Oct 17, 2011 5:04 am

I'm averaging -7 on LG and a lot of it is timing. Most of the time, I take FOREVER on a LG and I never really get to or get through the last game. Someone recommended that I play lots of Sudoku. What do you guys think? Will it REALLY help me much at this point?

I don't know about sudoku, but I was awesome at minesweeper after mastering LSAT logic games. Try playing that, with an eye toward drawing inferences as quickly as possible.

I think you'll be better off just doing more logic games.

crosstraining for the logic games, nice!

but seriously, just do more logic games...research shows that cross training doesnt really help in regards to athletic coordination since only repitition of the actual action will develop that....just keep doing logic games

Just because a few similar skills are utilized in both LG and sudoku puzzles does not mean that getting better at one makes you better at the other. I was a champ at sudokus before the LSAT and only knew 1 or 2 people thay could do the hardest puzzles faster than me. Yet I started off poorly in logic games since it has its own unique set of tricks and methods. The best way to learn logic games is to do (and then dissect) real logic games.

I started playing sudoku following the suggestions of many in hopes of improving my logic games. I actually spent a good chunk of time at the beginning of every study session doing sudoku puzzles and what I learned is this: the more sudoku you play the quicker you'll recognize the sudoku patterns and solve suduko puzzles. That is, playing sudoku will make you better at sudoku. There is an inflection point you get to after playing so much sudoku where you notice a spike in your speed and ability at the game. In my opinion, NONE of this transfers over to logic game ability. However, it is fair to expect that a similar inflection point will come in logic game ability the more logic games you play.

There are around 250 actual LSAT logic games for you to practice on... assuming you take each one 3 times that 750 individual games - thats plenty of study material - there's no point in wasting time on sudoko.

just as an fyi Sudoku was included in Other Stuff section of "TLS1776's Thoughts on the LSAT" in the TLS Content Competition section of TLS. I'm a big fan of this guide.

I'm actually a competetive Minsweeper player (well sub-20 intermediate) and sudoku player (1:32 on a puzzle at websudoku.com), and yet, I usually get -2 to -5 on games with no improvement...

No.

If you want to get better at LG, do actual LG and learn the trends and tricks of real questions.

Take more, redo them, make sure you know what inferences to draw, etc.

No need to do Soduku. There have been 64 tests released all with 4 games. You have plenty of games to work with.

You should play logic games to improve at logic games.
