Please Rank the Following Schools by OVERALL PRESTIGE

Post by justinfrantzen » Mon Mar 03, 2014 1:05 am

All, obviously considering a law school here, but I wanted to get opinions on how the schools compared to each other on the basis of overall prestige. Overall prestige factors in all of the school's programs (law, business, medicine, journalism, etc.), its alums, athletic programs, acceptance rate, etc.

Duke
Emory
Wash U
SMU
Tulane
Colorado (Boulder)

Thank you,

Justin

Duke (national)
Wash U/Emory (depending on midwest/south)
Tulane/SMU/Boulder (depending on respective regions)

I think it's obvious that Duke is a step or two or more above Tulane, SMU, and CU, but it would be more valuable to have all six schools ranked so I can see how they compare from top to bottom. It goes without saying that not everybody will get into Duke.

Prestige is contingent upon region. It is not top to bottom.

These things are obviously fuzzy and nonquantitative, but I agree with this.

None of that crap matters (seriously, athletic programs?). What matters is the likelihood of employment after graduation. Duke obviously wins that, and the rest are just sort of there. They are much more regional schools, and will place somewhere between OK and well in their region, but still won't compare to Duke.

Duke is the most prestigious nationwide

Washington U St Louis is a pretty big deal (in general not law specifically). It's med school and engineering are top. In the midwest it's considered relatively prestigious.

Emory is better known than the other three. Not much pull outside the south though.

All true. Emory and WUSTL, in terms of law firm hiring, are in that tier behind USC/UCLA/Vanderbilt in that they send a non-negligible number of grads to large law firms+clerkships (b/t 25--30% of the class).

On the metric OP seems to care about, it's still Duke light years ahead of everyone else, I would think. WUSTL and Emory are good schools, though; WUSTL has a kick-ass medical school.

The metric OP cares about is useless and dumb.

Duke - 62% Prestigious
Emory - 45% Prestigious
Wash U - 51% Prestigious
SMU - 26% Prestigious
Tulane - 18% Prestigious
Colorado (Boulder) - 4% Prestigious

Don't brag about schools with less than 75% prestige. Don't mention going to schools with less than 50% prestige at country clubs, cocktail mixers, dinner parties, et cetera. Always outright deny going to any school with less than 25% prestige. Your welcome.

Is it just like a universally-accepted fact that 0Ls from shite undergrads hell-bent on law school invariably get gnarly hard-ons whenever someone mentions the accompanying undergraduate school's "prestige?"

Is it really big fat guys who feel the need to provide meta-commentary about the quality of questions instead of either answering them or staying away? Ohh, you think prestige is a bad metric?? You should totally call the OP out!

Answered OP's question while showing how ridiculous it is at the same time. Nicely done.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
