Top Law Schools

I am applying to UNC Chapel Hill Law school for next fall and am taking the LSAT in Dec. right now I am scoring 157-160 on practice tests and have a 3.6 GPA from UNC undergrad. I have been working for the past 4 years. Do you think that will help at all? I am also in-state. What are my chances?

i think youll be in with a 160, maybe even a point or two lower, due to your in-state status.

Well, UNC's website says that their medians are 3.6 and 161, so I'd have to say that with a 160, being instate, and having WE, you'd have a pretty darn good shot. Would it hurt to get your LSAT up? Nah. Heck, if you got it up to 165 it would be worth your while to shoot for other good schools in your area... Emory, W&L, W&M, although that 15000 in-state tuition at Chapel Hill would be pretty tough to pass on. (I'm a Tar Heel myself, so best of luck).

I'm a UNC grad as well. I'm seriously considering UNC Law but I'm concerned about it's reputation and the opportunities it offers. Is there a particular reason why you're trying to go UNC? Thanks.

I think that the in-state tuition combined with job opportunities upon graduation are unbeatable. I have had a lot of friends who have gone there and really enjoyed it (as much as you can with law school )

What kind of job opportunities did your friends mention to you. I know UNC has an incredible reputation in NC, but since I am working and living in New York, I know UNC still doesn't offer a ton of opportunities up here. Not to say I am set on living in NY but, I'm just afraid of being stuck with a certain set of opportunities coming out of law school.

Hmm...I definitely understand that. Most of them have taken jobs with large firms in Raleigh or Charlotte, so I don't know that much about opportunities in NYC. I would go to websites of reputable firms or ones that you would like to work at up there to see where their attorneys have graduated from. That would give you an idea of where they like to hire from and if they recruit from UNC.

For me, it's not NY, it's more my interest in international law that makes me worry about going to UNC. I suppose if I did end up at UNC (not a bad thing) I would have to focus on something different. But anyways, thanks again.

Quite honestly, intl law (if you mean international biglaw and not The Hague or something of that sort) is really only achievable from T-14, and it's more competitive than NY for sure. Your best shot is to be familiar with a place and a language (China, say), get T-14, get Biglaw, prove that you would be more useful somewhere outside the US. But I digress. UNC's good for anywhere in NC obviously (although Charlotte should contract somewhat since Wachovia just asploded), Atlanta if you're good, and you'll get a look outside the region if you're boss.

Yeah, I definitely follow you. International law is what a ton of polisci/intl.rel. majors want to do out of college. Granted I have experience with working with IGOs like the UN and the OAS through a couple of internships in Latin America. Just curious about what opportunities UNC provides, and if there are any routes that might seem desirable for someone like me.

I am out of state with a 3.6 and a 164. I also work at an Innocence Project and am graduating with honors. Do I have a chance at UNC? I am told I will probably get waitlisted.
