CHANCE A URM 180 AA MALE / 3.0 GPA HYS

Post by amgates » Fri May 06, 2022 8:40 am

I am probably the most reverse splitter you have ever seen but I am curious whether or not I should even apply to any law school. My GPA is a result of extreme circumstances and will be explained in my addendum. What I do know is that being a black man, there is the biggest boost of any group. I had an admissions officer at USC told me once she could count on a hand all the black men who scored over a 170 (in a given cycle) and that 165 is the sweet spot. That said, what do you think are my chances with a perfect application and this subpar GPA with narrative explanation. BTW, I may not even need scholarships, so I don't even know how being able to pay full price will affect this. Obviously I want to hear about chances for HYS and then the Top 10. I assume someone would take me in Top 16 already.

If the LSAT becomes optional this may really help me, because other black candidates may not submit with high GPAs. However my 180 places me at top of test scores in the black application pool cycle. I feel like I will be rewarded for my perfect score being a black male more so than anything.

I think you have a good shot at CCN but not HYS.

Yale actually posts the lowest GPA in the most recent entering class. It's 3.25: https://law.yale.edu/admissions/profiles-statistics.

Respectfully, I think you're probably wrong. 180 as a black man is so rare that maybe Yale is out, but Harvard of Stanford for sure on in. That is not that bad 3.25. Black men have the biggest URM boost and are the second most unrepresented.

If you're so sure about your chances, why did you come on here and ask people to chance you?

I mean, your LSAT places you in the top of all scorers of any race. I get the point that it’s rarer in Black candidates, but your score isn’t high for Black applicants; it’s high for all applicants.

I don’t think anyone can give you definitive chances for HYS because you’re a splitter, if one with some specific advantages not all splitters have, and splitter outcomes are unpredictable. I think it’s absolutely worth applying everywhere because you absolutely could get in, and I think chances are decent that you have some great outcomes, it’s just impossible at this point to say which ones specifically.

And I’m not sure there’s any benefit to someone saying a 40% chance and someone else saying a 80% chance - you’re going to apply regardless, right? I don’t think anyone will say there’s no point at all in applying to those schools, save your money. Even talons saying you don’t have a good shot at HYS isn’t saying “don’t apply.” So since the only real choices before you are apply/don’t apply, I think don’t apply is pretty much ruled out, and you seem committed to applying, so not sure what point asking to be chanced serves.

As for whether you can pay full price - that doesn’t matter. HYS don’t do merit-based scholarships and pretty sure their admissions have nothing to do with how much aid you qualify for. And unless an applicant has truly dire credit, everyone can get loans to pay for law school, so schools don’t really care about your ability to pay - the school gets its money whether it comes from you or the federal government.

Just blanket the T14 and see what happens.
