Chances at T14 + apply to GULC or Cornell?

Post by Maxcol95 » Tue Feb 16, 2021 2:25 pm

Hi guys, i needed some advice here.

I would like to know what do you think me chances are of a T14, and if that's even my best option for what i want. I have applied to NYU, Duke, NU, Berkeley. I want to apply to one more, either Cornell or GULC, what do you guys think? Also i should mention that i am not exactly debt averse but i would certainly consider a lower ranked school if the scholarship is big enough.
I have also applied to UT, Vanderbilt, BU and WashU in case i don't get into a T14.

My goal is biglaw in either NYC, Boston, Philly, Chicago, D.C. or SF.

I am an URM i got 164/3.41

There are a couple factors at play here, but I would apply to all the T14; at least from NYU on down.

I think you should add BC to your list if Boston is one of your targets (as far as I'm aware, employers treat these two schools quite evenly). I'd personally cut UT, unless someone has more knowledge about UT here and knows they place strongly in NYC, but I think their most common placement by far is Texas. So if I were you I'd do something like this:
NYU, Berk, Mich, Penn, UVA, Duke, Northwestern, Cornell, GULC, Vandy, WashU, BU, BC. I'd maybe consider adding GW, Fordham and maybe, maybe Emory, if I could get great scholarships to them (and by great I mean like 80%+ in tuition).
I'd make sure you ask for app waivers to the schools directly. I hope you're applying next cycle, as it is a bit late now for good scholarships.
URMs have unpredictable cycles. If you have the ability, I'd retake the LSAT. This cycle is more competitive, I have no idea if the 2021-22 cycle will be, but just from previous cycles one can see getting a few points higher makes a big difference. Additionally, if you're applying to matriculate in fall of 2021 you are late to the game. I applied in February for my cycle, and even though I ignored a decent bit of advice on this forum (much to my chagrin), I had okay outcomes but anywhere I was borderline I was waitlisted or didn't get into; moreover, I received less money than I had anticipated (for the most part, albeit some schools still gave me fantastic options).
Best of luck.

I think that you are likely to be admitted to Cornell.

Also, it may make a difference as to how you categorize yourself as a URM. If AA male, then your chances are very good at all of your targeted schools.

Thanks for the answer, i have applied to both Cornell and GULC as well as the ones i had previously mentioned, i forgot to mention in the original post (my bad) that my degree is international, it's a law degree from Europe, but i am an American citizen, also i am not an AA, and if it helps i think i have quite ok softs (speak 3 languages and played professional tennis for a few years)
Do you think i will receive scholarship from any of the schools i applied for? and if so in what range, in terms of $, should i expect it ?

Scholarships are not likely based on your numbers (164 LSAT & 3.41 uGPA) as your numbers are below both medians for the schools on your list. Your numbers are quite low for any top 14 law school. I suspect that Cornell is your best shot for admission among the T-14 (Cornell's medians are 167 LSAT & 3.74 uGPA) so not a certainty as a non-AA, non-Native American URM.

You might receive serious consideration for a scholarship at:

Washington & Lee
Iowa
Wisconsin
SMU
Wake Forest University
University of Richmond
University of Houston

Additionally, scholarship offers are possible from any law school with a median LSAT score of 161 or lower.

If you were an AA male, then your chances for admission would be greatly enhanced.

In light of your target markets, you might want to consider Fordham, Temple, & Boston College.

I’m a MA so I believe that still counts as URM, are T14s a reach then?

Yes, they are still reach schools for you. As a Mexican American applicant, you might receive a boost of 2 or 3 points on the LSAT. But, this is up to each school and it is confidential.

My recommendation is to add several law schools to your list.

Median stats of enrolled students:

Yale 173/3.93
Harvard 173/3.86
Stanford 171/3.89

Columbia 171/3.70
Chicago 170/3.90

Penn 169/3.89
NYU 169/3.78
Duke 169/3.76

Northwestern 168/3.77
Virginia 168/3.86
Michigan 168/3.76

Cornell 167/3.74
Georgetown 167/3.76
Texas 167/3.73
WashUStL 167/3.67

UCal-Berkeley 166/3.78
USC 166/3.76
UCLA 166/3.74
Vanderbilt 166/3.74

Emory 165/3.77
GWU 165/3.71

Minnesota 164/3.79
Univ. of Washington 164/3.65
Notre Dame 164/3.66

UC-Davis 163/3.51
Fordham 163/3.53
William & Mary 163/3.69

Boston College 162/3.56
Univ. of Georgia 162/3.71
UC-Irvine 162/3.56

UNC 161/3.49
Wake Forest 161/3.60
Arizona State (ASU) 161/3.63
Iowa 161/3.61
SMU (Southern Methodist) 161/3.63
Colorado, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, & George Mason are all at 161 LSAT median

Univ. of Arizona 160/3.51
U. Richmond 160/3.51
Temple 160/3.50
Washington & Lee 160/3.41
