Top Law Schools

The title says most of it. I was recently diagnosed with ADHD after college, but the damage was done with a 2.5 GPA from a D1 school. I recently took the LSAT, and got a 170 on it. I was wondering, am I completely screwed for getting into a T1 or T2 school?

Some work experience would help distance you from your GPA. Your LSAT is good for 5 years I believe so you should consider taking some time off before law school. You'll probably get a bite somewhere in the T1 with work experience and a 170.

First, congrats on your terrific LSAT!

Now, the key question: what kind of law do you want to practice?

In a vacuum, it looks like WUSTL's the clear answer. You have a 75% chance of getting in and a 65% chance of getting >$100k in merit aid. But, again, this depends on your goals out of law school. If you're dead-set on practicing law in Wisconsin, for instance, it may make more sense to attend Wisconsin Law, even though in a vacuum it's a significantly weaker law school compared to WUSTL.

To offer a single data point: I was in a very similar position (UGPA below all relevant 25%iles, LSAT competitive for t14 but not YSH) and got into a few decent law schools. Ultimately, I did 1L basically tuition-free at a T30 school and transferred up after 1L. My best piece of advice is to apply broadly; I think I applied to about 30 schools, mostly ranked between 8 and 50 (also applied at Chicago and a couple local TT schools). Also echo the advice about getting some work experience; that will help for most schools.

3.0 ugpa/178 lsat.

Got in 2 of T14 including a T6. Didn’t apply to many after T14 but I was about 50/50 with the regional (DC/NY so you can pretty much guess which schools I am talking about) schools, all ranked in top 50, I applied to.

I think just a few more points on the LSAT would help. Literally, like 1-3 more points. Then you have to pick what you want to do-- you could ED UVA. UVA at sticker is a tough sell.

Odds are you will get offers for $$ to $$$$ at schools in the T25-T50 range. They vary on value.

A good strategy is probably to go with $$$$ and then attempt a transfer if possible/desirable. That way, if you do get in, it's basically as if you got a 1/3rd tuition scholarship.

CW is to never attend a school you would not be comfortable graduating from. A lot of people want to transfer out but a forced curve is a forced curve.

Agreed. Going in planning to transfer is never a good strategy. Certainly if it becomes an option during 1L that's one thing, but it's better to plan as if that won't happen.
