3.5 at USMA and 173

I scored a 173 on my second LSAT. In 2016, I applied to a bunch of schools and wasn't accepted to any T-14 schools with a 161 LSAT at the time and my relatively low uGPA (3.5).

My plan now is to transition to law school from the Army with 7 years active duty time to include Company Command. How much will my work experience help to balance out my uGPA (3.5) and will I be competitive for some/most T-14 even though my 173 was on the second attempt?

Thanks in advance for any insights.

Most schools will only consider the best score. You will be competitive for the T14 with that LSAT and GPA combination. Good luck!

You should be able to get scholarships as well. Apply early (September/October) and negotiate. If you get scholarships earlier, schools will have more funds and leeway for you to negotiate with them.

I think you'll do very well with that 173 and your experience. That is not a horrible GPA either! Apply widely and make sure your application really shows how much you have to offer. Good look.

Awesome, thanks for the feedback. I will definitely look into scholarship information for each of the schools since I will only be getting 80% of the G.I. Bill.

I think you have a legit shot at H/S, maybe 50/50.

Probably in at CCN, and significant scholly offers below....especially if your work experience is well articulated. Schools really like service academy peeps because they do well with employers....you're a top 1% candidate among the service academy pool.

Thanks for the vote of confidence Wipfelder, I will apply to HYS but realize it will be a toss up.

Also, I am interested in public interest law. A path I foresee is competing for a fellowship post-graduation and then transitioning to become an Assistant District Attorney. Maybe later competing to become an Assistant U.S. Attorney.

Anyone have experience with a similar path or have recommendations on specific schools that are well-suited for my goals? I assume HYS would all be great options but I'm asking otherwise I guess, thanks.

ponderingmeercat, sorry for the late bump. I was wondering if you still had those statistics? I’m a service academy grad applying this year.
