How much will an addendum help me?

3.5/177, trying to get into HYS. I had extenuating medical circumstances that affected my performance freshman year, when I had a sub-3.0 GPA. This can be confirmed by a doctor or the university health services, if it'll help. If they discounted my freshman year grades entirely, by LSDAS GPA would be around a 3.65, and there are a few other grades I plan on explaining for less rock-solid reasons. What do you think my chances are at HYS/possibility of money at CCN? Thanks in advance for your help!

I don't think an addendum will really make a big difference. Especially if you're only talking about a 3.5 and a 3.65.
You will get into every school CCN on down. Probably big money from NYU on down and should still get some good money from CC. You have a chance at getting into H. YS is unlikely

Honestly it might be a bad look to write an addendum about how much better your grades would be when the "better" is only a 3.65. If you do this, I'd definitely keep it to two sentences, max.

Well the discrepancy is between a year of sub-3.0 GPA and a 3.65 GPA the remaining three years - that seems like a pretty big difference to me. It's actually slightly larger than the difference in the example given in "bad GPA" section of the TLS guide for writing addenda. Granted, it's still well below the 25th percentile at each of these schools, but it seems closer to the probable inverse percentile of wherever my LSAT lands for each of them. Perhaps that makes less of a difference than I'm thinking(/hoping) though

The only discrepancy they care about is that between the GPA you're reporting and that which you claim is indicative of your academic performance. Here, that's 0.15 points. Still, how sub-3.0 of a GPA are we talking?
HOWEVER, after doing some searching on myLSN, I've decided you should write one. A 3.65-ish has 70+% shot at H (you're still out at Y and S), whereas a 3.5-ish has a mere 25%-ish chance at H. It might be wise to point out to H that you fit better with that 3.65 grouping that the 3.5 grouping. (plus, writing an addendum let's you talk about overcoming shit, saving room in your PS for other stuff)

Makes sense to me, thanks! And not that sub-3.0; by the end of the second semester it was around a 2.9. Followup question: There are other grades that I have a non-medical explanation for that I may include in my addendum. If they were *completely* discounted, which seems unlikely, this would bring my GPA to 3.72. Could this change the calculus at any of these schools? My initial impression is that Y and S are still off the table, but if they agreed that my explanation was legitimate I might have a very strong chance at H.

All depends on the reasons...?
I think Y would still be out, could get lucky with S. Never know with Faye.
