Re: URM 171 and 3.8, what are my HYS chances?
Congrats on H. Y and S are harder to predict but you should absolutely apply. Blanket the top 14 to get that money.

Long time lurker but first time poster! I really need some guidance as to where to apply. I have a 171, 3.96 from Cornell (but I expect this to drop to a 3.8 when other grades are factored in). I am also a URM.
Any advice?
Basically, you will get in to every school in the country other than Yale forsure and you have a very good chance at Yale.
Make sure your app is polished and you apply as close to the first day apps open up as possible.
Edit: do you have any work experience or are you K-JD? Some work experience will help with HYS as well

Your URM status gives you a huge boost. If you really want Yale some work experience may help, but you can get Yale, Stanford, and Harvard even with those numbers. Apply to EVERY SINGLE T-14. You will have bit scholarship money in the lower T-14 and some money from CCN. Also, check out the URM Cycle thread for this year. There were some people the got into Harvard this year with lower stats than you. Apply this year and if you do not like your results reapply when you have some work experience or a better LSAT.bgt1995 wrote:Thanks so much for responding! I have a good deal of work experience. I've done some undergrad poli sci research, and I've worked at two death penalty clinics in the past two years. I have also done a fair amount of my own research on the politics of the USSC, and I will be doing a thesis on this next year. I do want to go K-JD (I've known I wanted to go to law school for five years) but I feel like I could bite the bullet and wait if need be.
CONGRATS ON SUCH GREAT NUMBERS! Good luck

You can if there is a strong regional school where you want to practice just for safety, but I think you will get full scholarships or close to it from the lower T-14.bgt1995 wrote:omg thank you for the advice!! one more question: should I apply to schools outside the T-14? I don't want to do law school in a nonT14 but I am really nervous about not getting in anywhere and then being screwed.

A URM was waitlisted at Harvard with a 3.8/164.... I think you are going to be just fine.

Not getting in anywhere? You will likely get into every school in the T14 with the exception of Yale. Stanford I would say you have a 90% chance assuming your LOR and PS. Short of having committed a murder or serious felony and completely fucking up your interviews I think its safe to say you're safe.
Should you apply to schools out side the T14? I wouldn't just because I don't want to attend anywhere outside of the T14. You could though for sake of negotiations, but trying to leverage WUSTL against CCN HYS may be futile. It can't hurt though if you have the money/have vouchers.

Obligatory T5 is not a thing, it's T6, CCN are peers.
