3.86/161 Disciplinary Record, Chances?

Post by caleb003 » Tue Dec 22, 2015 10:25 am

Hello,

I have 3.86 G.P.A. in Economics from a top 20 public University and made a 161 on the LSAT. I think I can do better on the LSAT. I was once placed on disciplinary probation by my school my freshman year. This summer, I was arrested twice within one month. The first was on suspicion of DUI but was only convicted of reckless driving. The second was for trespassing, this was a result of a misunderstanding and the charge was completely dropped and expunged from my record. As a result of these arrests I was once again placed on Disciplinary Probation. I have several strong internships and strong letters of recommendations. My question is how much will my disciplinary history hurt me and with my numbers what type of schools should I consider applying for? I don't really want to sit out a year but am open to considering it.

Thanks.

Seems like you're an idiot. Wonder what an ad comm will think. Maybe they won't care. Maybe they'll think the same as I do.

A recent arrest and disciplinary probation will hurt you, obviously. If you're a senior, sitting out a year or two (and not getting arrested during that time) sounds like your best option. You can try to up your LSAT during that time too. Right now you just look like someone who gets in trouble (including legal trouble) and doesn't learn from it. That's a bad look for trying to get into law school.

These are both stupid things to get arrested for, but they seem pretty minor. Best thing to do is focus on the LSAT and not get into any trouble over the next year and it probably won't affect your admissions, and if you keep your nose clean throughout law school, C&F will be fine

OP asked this in conjunction with disciplinary record issues.

Not really. It could be taken either way. Thanks though.

I really don't think it can be taken either way. "how much will my disciplinary history hurt me and with my numbers what type of schools should I consider applying for." The primary question is about the disciplinary record and he wants to know how it, along with his numbers, will affect his odds.

OP, I would just look at what schools in what region you're interested in, and if your numbers are in the ballpark, going for it. The whole disciplinary thing is going to matter to different adcomms different amounts. It does seem like you have poor judgment, but some adcomms will likely overlook it, while others will not. It would be ideal to put some time between the arrests and the application, but I don't think one year will be a huge difference.

That's fine that you think that.
