Chances for Y/S? International Applicant

Hey guys, I'm an international applicant (born and raised in Canada) and will be applying to law school this fall. I wanted to gauge my chances of admission at some the top schools in the U.S, particularly Yale (my top choice and probably the only school apart from S that i'd seriously consider leaving Canada for). My stats are as follows:

- Joint-Honours B.A with first class honours, (3.96/4 CGPA) from McGill University
- Medium ECs..
- International volunteer/work experience.
- Just received an M.Phil from Oxford
- LSAT: 174

I'm also a black male if that counts for anything. I'm certainly cognizant of the fact that my stats are very competitive for the many of the top schools, however, I wanted to know if I'm a lock for Yale or if I can do anything to improve my chances.

Congrats on your stats. Everybody is going to yell at you about them. But seriously, congrats.

Thanks a lot. I know that my chances for the T6 are very good, however, it is my understanding that you just never know with Y as the selection process there is pretty opaque. Last cycle a good friend of mine was rejected from Y with a 175 and a 3.9 CPGA also from McGill (she did get HSCCN though). I was certain she was going to be admitted and was incredulous when I found out she was refused.

Getting above 75th percentile LSAT could help. (lol, 'retake') Though I don't think anyone's a lock for Yale! Best of luck.

I think you are almost a lock for H. Y is a black box but I would bet on you getting in.

Lock at Harvard. As others have said, Yale is a black box. They can reject a 175/4.0 all-american athlete but accept a much lower scoring candidate due to them being a special snowflake

Obviously, no one is a lock for Yale, but you're in incredibly good shape with your profile. You may not be AA, but I'd presume you would get a similar boost if the school's objective is to ensure a diverse class (Idk for sure about this--maybe someone else has experience with that?) If you get that boost, I think you'd be a near lock.

Also, I was reading the the dean of admission's blog recently, and she really stressed how much of an emphasis they put on academic letter of recommendations. I'm sure with your profile you have at least a couple professors willing to go to bat for you, but just make sure you're giving your recommenders all of the information they'd need to write stellar letters for you. Good luck!
