Thanks everyone for your input its greatly appreciated. Does anyone know how UVA is as far as distributing scholarships I know right know that they're my top choice with UM second only because of their business school as well and the possibility of a JD/MBA. I understand I need to write a strong Why UVA essay but has anyone had experience with them as far as negotiating and how open they are to it?

I'll definitely toss an application in at Harvard as I never thought it was realistic until now however, I already carry debt from UG and I'm trying to balance going to a school with good career prospects with not taking on massive debt.

You will probably get in to Columbia/NYU with more money than UVA (LSAT v. GPA preference). Columbia also has a 3-year MBA program and that or NYU's is probably at least as good as at Virginia/Michigan. Why do you prefer Darden/Ross to CBS/Stern?

Apply to H and Berkeley. Best chances of scholarships likely at Columbia/NYU probably half, good chance of full rides at Michigan/Duke/Cornell/NW

UVA is because I want to be in the south and I loved the campus when I went. I also have some ties up at Michigan and I enjoyed the campus as well but the biggest drawback for me aside from cost for NYU and Columbia is the proximity to the market I want to work in (Charlotte) although I have heard that NYU ED could provide a full ride. However, I hesitate with that due to the sheer punt of living expenses associated with living in NY.

As for the business school questions I was considering a J.D./MBA however I think I'm just going to stick with the JD. Through some PMs and the information I have received on here the consensus is that I can take some business classes regardless and avoid another year's tuition.

I had about the same stats (slightly lower lsat) and I did pretty well but certainly didn't snag any full rides. Mostly got between 75-105k from ccn and down.

I got some unexpected waitlists in the lower t14 though. I think they're a little wary of high lsats. If I could do it again, I would definitely write more Why X essays. I think I could have avoided some waitlists that way.

Other than some splitter-unfriendly YPs you're gonna have a good time.

If I were you I would absolutely apply to HYS in addition to the rest of the t14. You will probably get fee waivers, so why not? It's not like it is an impossibility for you to get into HYS, and all you risk losing is a definite no. I would definitely either write an addendum or focus your personal statement on the effect that your family situation had on you and your grades. That is an incredibly trying thing to go through, and although I know it is gospel around here that "softs don't count", I am a firm believer that they can play a positive role.
