Chance Me? 3.8 GPA, 165 LSAT URM

Hello all! I have been browsing these forums for quite a while and have finally decided that I will be applying for the 2014-2015 application cycle.
Currently I have 3.8 LSDAS GPA and scored a 165 on the June LSAT. I am also a Black male attending a top public undergrad (UVA). I definitely plan to focus my application efforts on the T-14, but what is the likelihood of getting into HYS or a large scholarship at a T-14?
Also, I am in the unique situation of being riased in a fairly affluent household (with two adopted parents of a different race). Is it smart to talk about this aspect in my diversity statement or would it inadvertantly show that I am not as "diverse" as other URM applicants?

Thanks for the reply. I'm not wedded to the idea of going to HYS... Would my numbers be sufficient for admission at any of the remaining T6 or Berk? I would prefer not to retake if possible

Literally 5 multiple choice questions will change your life. You could get into some, sure, but the debt you'll have will be outrageous

Disagree completely. He's an AA with a 3.8 and a 165. That's like a unicorn. He's probably getting into HYS already, and the T6 are basically a lock.
idk about money tho

If you retake and get 5 more questions right and end up with a 168, then you have substantially more $$. As I said before, he could probably get in to a bunch of T14, but if you end up with a ton of debt vs ending up with a little debt than its a no brainer.
Retake.

yes, I almost guarantee you would get into NYU. But you should retake because just a few more points really opens up HYS

AA male with a 3.8/165? He's a lock for everything but Y and S, folks. And with the applicant pool continuing to contract, he'll very likely land more than one full ride in the T14. ED to NU would be a lock, and Cornell would probably give him the maximum. And I doubt those would be the only two.
Sure, a 168 would result in more full scholarships, would probably guarantee S, and would improve chances for Y. But he's already going to be one of the very top AA male applicants for his cycle. Some of the posts in this thread are way too pessimistic.

Do you enjoy UVA? They'd probably throw you solid money. And do you qualify for instate there? I'd think that's a solid play

To answer another part of your question, definitely mention being adopted in your PS. That's something unique and diverse. I don't know if I would say that you come from an affluent home though. Being an AA male, who is also adopted, with a 3.8/165 puts you at a huge advantage throughout the T14. I don't think you need to retake.

While I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at UVA, I really would love to attend law school outside of the South-East. I've lived in VA/NC/SC area my whole life and am ready to break free so to speak haha. I will definitely apply and see how things shake out, but it's not at the top of my list (especially since UVA law seems to have a high YP rate; which could very well impact my application there given my numbers).

Thank you very much for the response. I will definitely leave out the affluent part haha

Thank you for the reply! I am particularly interested in Berk, NYU, and Columbia. Any insight into how my numbers would fair at these 3 schools in regards to admission and $ money?

Some of these posts are completely pessimistic. I was a 3.9 165 AA male who went to a good public school (think non-Michigan Big Ten). I was accepted to Berkeley with 100k scholarship. I decided to retake and boosted my score up 5 points and got Yale. That was in 2011. With fewer applicants you have a chance to get HYS with your current score.

H is solid but not guaranteed. The issue is that OP may now be qualified for a full ride at Cornell and Northwestern, but with a higher score could be looking at the same money at a t6

The OP said he wants HYS. Most people here seem to have come to the agreement that H is likely so retaking so he can get substantial scholarship money isn't a priority, getting accepted to HYS is the priority because all aid is based on need.
Apply now but be prepared to retake if you are truly set on HYS since a few more points would all but guarantee 1 if not more of HYS.

Of course a better score would open up more options. I already said as much in my post. My point was just that the majority of the posts in this thread are way too pessimistic about what his options would be if he were to stand pat.
As for H, his app would have to be a dumpster fire in other respects for him not to get in. I've put his numbers essentially at the top of a search range including much lower numbers here. Notice how far away his numbers are from the line between an acceptance and the WL when you look at the individual applicants' numbers on the full site.
