Disappointed here. 169 (from 167 in October)... decent soft. HYS any shot?

Yeah, I checked there too! But not that many people are actually my combination. It's a very small sample and they haven't really applied to same range of schools and/or did not update :SBigZuck wrote:http://www.mylsn.info
Hey you! I hope December was kinder to you than it was to me. Alas, I won't be retaking this year, that's for sure. Would applying now put me at a significant disadvantage you think? and HYS a coin toss or a waste of money?Fianna13 wrote:Hey you were my number twin from October! I say you have a decent chance at UChi and NYU. Not sure about HYS
Applying to Yale is probably futile. But congrats on the GPA!esther0123 wrote:Disappointed here. 169 (from 167 in October)... decent soft. HYS any shot?
Summoned? Barring substantial financial strain, I would apply to HYS in your position, or at least HS - and yale for the "what if" factor, and since the late app doesnt hurt you. I never applied to Yale, but I knew my grades werent up to par.Fianna13 wrote:December was actually quite kind to me. I'm quite glad since it's my last retake. With apps declining, I don't think the effect would be as significant as before. Of course the earlier the better, but I don't it matters too much for those 2 I mentioned. As for HYS, Yale has always been a blackbox. Harvard is a bit more number heavy than S, and depending on your softs, your chance at S isn't too bad either. Maybe Jbagelboy can provide better insight and analysis than I can.

Harvard admitted a few 3.95+/169 off the WL last summer, but they had strong/very strong softs and mostly went to prestigious UGs. If you went to a competitive university or small college for UG and have real WE you have a non-negligible, but still small, chance.
Stanford's 25th is a bit deceptive. First, those are almost entirely URM candidates below 170. Second, very small class size: recall the 25th% is like 45 people. This isnt Harvard or Columbia where you can squeek in sometimes without really standing out - to get in with a 169, you'll really have to impress Faye because after removing URMs, you are competing for one of maybe 10-15 spots for people with those numbers. Moreover, SLS (Y aside) is the only top school defying the trend of loosening standards with declining apps - they actually increased both medians last year, and wont be looking to forfeit them.
Still, Stanford and Harvard are both very possible (depending on softs) and worth the application fees. You will probably wind up with MVP $$, two of CCN and WL at HS with potential for movement over the summer.
