I think a 171 should mean a little bit more than than it did a year or two ago. Applications are down about 20-30,000 from about 3-4 years ago and as you can tell by the falling medians, there are less and less school that are able to maintain 170+. So I think your 171 give you a decent chance at NYU, maybe Columbia too if you ED.

Thanks for the reply! I'm definitely willing to ED if that'll significantly improve my chances, so that's great news.

I believe Columbia recently announced a 171 median. I'd say personally my guess is at best 50/50.

Someone can correct me if this is no longer the case, but in previous cycles the perception was that ED didn't increase your chances much at Columbia, at least relative to the increase other ED schools. OP, in your position I would probably try to ED NYU.

I think Columbia is still unlikely with a 3.5, although its not impossible. Most students in the 3.4-3.6 range were either 75th%ile LSAT, urm, or from HYPCS undergrad w/ strong softs and got a little float. With blegh WE and softs, your chances are not impossible, but not great. Same goes for UChicago, where even more emphasis is traditionally placed on GPA.

Conversely, you should be in at NYU. Also Penn and UVA if you write convincing "Why X" essays. For most legal jobs, the difference in opportunities between schools like NYU, Penn, Chicago and Columbia is negligible.
