Ultimately, I want to work in criminal justice. But straight out of law school, I expect to be working in the private sector. My top choices are UChicago, Columbia, and up.

If that's the case, your best bet would be to retake. Even if you were to get into CCN, you wouldn't get a large amount $$

Sounds like a natural fit for UChi law c/o 2017. All kidding aside, you're likely to get huge money from the lower T14. If you want criminal law eventually, that may be worth taking over CCN close to sticker.

Criminal justice prosecutor or criminal justice PD/white collar? Given that you mention private practice, tend to figure the former... in which case, credited advice (that I'm stealing from another poster, but seems very valid, and can attest to its value for friends gunning for prosecutor) is to aim for a school near a federal district court that might afford you clinical opportunities to participate there, or internships/externships.
Would probably be somewhat similar advice for PD/white collar defense (and I'd also obviously advise that you take on as low amount of debt as possible if it's PD).

HYS look pretty much out, but worth an app. You have a solid shot but no guarantees at CC (below both medians at Chi and below Columbia's LSAT), but in at NYU. Definitely looking at money from the lower T14 though. Retake would put HYS on the table (though not sure why you need it for criminal law)

It's not that your soft is a bad one in any way, just that it won't be seen by ADCOMs as anything particularly impressive compared to others with equally impressive feats. Will it look good to the ADCOM? Sure. Will it make a difference at an HYS-type school where softs particularly matter? Not enough to change the outcome of the game.
Also, coming from a school that has a bunch of Nobel Prize winners doesn't mean a whole lot unless you were one of them.

I don't know about publishing single-handedly, but I did, and I consider it average. And I wasn't saying that UChi is average, just that the combination of your softs and your UG would not cause your cycle to differ significantly from the results on LSN. Be that as it may, it probably won't play a huge role in your admission. I wouldn't consider it a strong soft, but good for you nonetheless . I was in a social sciences PhD program at a school which is in the top 10 in its field. For top schools that's a decent thing to have but in no way is that a strong soft, especially when compared to people who are actually doing, you know, stuff that matters and makes a difference and/or is unique.

Fwiw I was published in STEM and attended a similarly/sometimes higher ranked UG. Im telling you, they may be above average softs, but we're no rhode scholars or olympic medalists. Pretty run of the mill for applicants to the very best law schools.

It would be more impressive if listed among a bunch of other time consuming activities (varsity athlete, part/full time job, president of student govt, etc). As is, it's solid but unspectacular.
