Afraid retaking might be a good call if you're intent on NYU/Columbia. You are currently below both medians.

Attending a top undergrad wont really help. You will have to retake the LSAT to get T14 (except for Cornell, which you may get now).

You'll get Cornell and GULC with your numbers.
You need to retake for 170+. Just two more points opens up money at UVA and below.

NYU opens up at 171+, CLS at 173+. Columbia will like your UG background (but it wont matter without 3-4 more pts on your lsat.). No other schools will care.
With your current stats, you're looking at the bottom T13. You're in at Cornell and maybe NU with your work experience. even a 169 would net you Duke & Michigan.
I think you know TCR here given your goals. If you're abroad for the Oct LSAT, then sign up for December
I will say that if you apply this fall, a few unexpected WL-> admit could occur. amsong just got into CLS with below medians like you. Idk. 95% of the time you'll be rejected tho

I think it is unlikely that you will get admitted to NYU/CLS. If you score two more points then I think you will have a pretty good chance. Your work experience seems interesting and the undergrad will help and give you a bump. I would expect for you to get into a bunch of schools in the T14 either right away or of the waitlist. Good luck this cycle.

I did indeed just get into CLS with below medians, and it was almost completely unexpected. I really had no business getting in just based on my scores. I think the two big factors were that my application as a whole told a strong narrative and I had glowing recommendations from my professors and employers. I'm sure I also got a boost from my Ivy background.
TLS advice is always retake. I agree, and I would likely have had a much shorter and much less anxious application cycle had I retaken and done at least a couple points better. Of course, this doesn't matter much if you are someone who truly just doesn't test well. But it will be much more difficult for you without a higher LSAT score. I don't think extracurriculars mean much unless they tell a bigger story about your life, your skills and your goals w/r/t law. If you can craft that into a compelling story, that will give you a much better chance.
Also, don't ignore the "Why X School" essays. I wrote the diversity essays but not the "Why X" because I thought they were a waste of time. In retrospect, I should have taken the time to write them.
Tl;dr—it can be done, but I was extraordinarily lucky.
