I remember thinking the same thing, but it's really not something to worry about. Northwestern's first round of decisions comes out around the same time Penn ED acceptances get released. NYU is similar. And there's a possibility you'll be in at Duke or Michigan even before that.randal01 wrote:Thanks, I think that makes a lot of sense. I feel like the drop in apps has made outperforming your numbers, as compared to the past 5 years, a much more realistic possibility. At the same time it’s far from a certainty that you will be able to outperform, which makes the application process for splitters that much more unnerving. You know that Columbia is (albeit highly unlikely) within the realm of possibility, but getting dinged at all T-14s other than Gtown and Cornell is a possibility too. That’s going to result in a lot of huge disappointments.
I can’t tell if I’m rationalizing laziness, or just trying to be risk averse, but I would so prefer to have a school locked up by December than apply broadly as a splitter and ride waitlists till June. Although I suppose if NU is more or less a given, then it’s not so bad, since that’s an acceptable, if less than ideal, outcome.
LSP is worthless in general, and it's worse than useless for splitters. Use LSN and my LSN.randal01 wrote:I'm also really surprised by the results for NYU. I thought I had no chance there according to Law School Predictor.
If you are dead-set on NYU or Penn, just ED to one of them. You're not passing up money anywhere anyway. If I were you I would ED NYU (in fact I did ED NYU with similar stats to yours, though I got waitlisted).randal01 wrote:Thanks guys. I really appreciate all the help. I don’t want to take up too much of everyone’s time but I have a couple questions/additional info to add.
1. Two of you mentioned using Penn’s 2nd round ED if things don’t go well initially. If I did that would I need to hold off on sending a regular Penn app in early Sept when I send out apps for other schools?
2. I know I said I’m open to all T-14s, but I should add that being in the NY area is a huge plus for me as I have a long-term girlfriend who lives in NYC. After realizing that I may have been setting the bar for myself a little low, I thought I should update to say that NYU/Penn are my absolute goal schools (Columbia too but that’s a long shot) with anything else being a disappointment. With that said, does it still not make sense to throw an ED to one of them?
Is there any disadvantage to applying to NYU/Columbia RD on Sept 1, then applying to Penn ED 2 if I don’t hear back early or get WL’d, as compared to doing NYU or Penn ED from the start? Is Penn ED 2 less of a boost then ED 1? Also, I know Penn is known to give a decent boost to ED applicants, is the same true for NYU?
