You won't be hurt at all no matter what you get on a re-take. It can only help you. A lot. Easy answer here, retake.

It's never really frowned upon. If you hit a school's median or exceed it, you'll be helping them out. So they have no reason to hold retakes against you, and every reason to look at just the highest score.metroidbum wrote:How much would I be hurt if I retook and only improved to 167/168? Would that be frowned upon?
The only problem is that I don't think there are many schools with a 168 median, unless some of those with a 169 median will fall after this cycle.
Retake for 168 and you get this:
Some better chances and a little more money at Cornell, but nothing too drastic. That's why I used 170 as an example. But if you think there's a chance you'll hit 170 or even 169, and your only concern is whether falling short and getting a 167-168 will hurt you, then you should really consider retaking.

Why is there such a huge discrepancy between the 166 chart and the 168 chart for NU and Duke?

Narrow search criteria, which led to a small sample size (too small). The results are more sensible if you search 166-168 rather than just 168.crumpetsandtea wrote:Why is there such a huge discrepancy between the 166 chart and the 168 chart for NU and Duke?

Retake. Michigan is probably going to be your best option with a 166, and from what I've experienced (and heard from others) they will try to strong-arm UM kids in terms of financial aid. With a retake, you can guarantee that you won't have to pay near-sticker to attend a t14, without one you very well might have to pay sticker.metroidbum wrote:Definitely seems like a retake could be in the cards. I'm just concerned about getting the october results back in time to get my applications out in a timely matter.
And there's that worry that I retake and do worse...yeesh.
