Where can my friend get in with these stats? He says his weak GPA ruined his chances at getting into anything above the top 20.

AA Male
3.2 GPA
174 LSAT

Softs
Worked full time in UG
Athlete in UG
Volunteer in political campaign
Supreme Court internship
2 years service in Peace Corps
Strong LOR

174 = top ten AA score per cycle. The GPA is not a deal breaker from CCN down.

W/ money? Really? I didn't think a school of that stature would offer money with those stats.

How much of a shot at H?

really unpredictable - Nova's link shows that there are so few AA male applicants in your situation that predicting outcomes is going to be pretty tough

Gotcha. Does Peace Corps experience provide a significant boost or not so much?

Edit spelling

That 174 is gonna take him places.

This cycle I was 3.2/167/AA male and was IN/WL everywhere but Yale and Berkeley (including IN @ CCN with $ at Chicago). He's gonna get in everywhere but Yale and maybe Stanford. Tell him not to sweat the process and just make sure the rest of the app doesn't give adcoms pause.

Thanks for pointing that out. That's interesting I thought it would help a little.

Nice! What were your softs? Of course if you don't mind my asking.

Yes.
aboutmydaylight wrote: If anyone's curious, for MA's the numbers are as follows:

Mean: 147.79
SD: 8.82
Number = 1853

Mean + 1SD = 156.61 (294-295)
Mean + 1.5SD = 161.02 (124-125)
Mean + 2SD = 165.43 (42-43)
Mean + 2.5SD = 169.84 (11-12)
Mean + 3SD = 174.25 (1-2)

Numbers are smaller because there's less MA's than AA's that apply. All approximations of course. I don't have the data on how many MA enroll/are accepted to the T-14 but iirc about 30 MA's enroll in HYS annually. Assuming everything's correct, that would correspond to an LSAT of 166-167 to be among the top 30 MA's that took the test. I have a (perhaps unfounded) presumption that MA's don't get even close to the pass that AA's get when it comes to GPA though. You'd probably still have to near 3.7 to be competitive with the lower end of those scores.

D1 athlete (4-year letterman)
HYP undergrad
Co-founded non-profit

Those were my biggest and they aren't huge. Other than that I had a couple finance internships and launched a failed web start-up. None of that has mattered much. I've performed pretty much how my numbers said I would, given my URM status.

I'm thinking he's got a terrific shot at everything but Y and maybe S. Yale is definitely out. I can't see them taking a 3.2 GPA. I think his chances at H are pretty damn good. We know from GAIA's guide that there are 3.2/174's at H right now. I think the Peace Corps is a non-negligible soft and will seal the deal for him.

Chance at Y, in at H and S. Full-rides from CCN on down.

Your friend may very well be one of the best AA male applicants of the cycle, if not the best.

Wow really, wasn't expecting that. What are his chances at Stanford if any?

california indicated he had very good chances at stanford ("in at S"), I would moderate this statement to reflect the fact that a 3.2 GPA even for AA is pushing it at H and S. I think he could anticipate a WL there and get in to H off the WL if they lose enough AA applicants with higher GPAs.

Also full ride is an overstatement at CC, since Hamilton is really for 175+ and the Ruby will no longer exist. That being said, he's basically guaranteed in at CCN and below with some $.

Aboutmydaylight or others - Do you have or know where I can find a similar distribution for Puerto Ricans? Thanks.

Not sure I agree with the chances at S or H... Yale's lowest accepted GPAs was a 3.49 - I doubt SLS/HLS are willing to go THAT far below :(

Careful on this one. LSN lumps all URMs together and URM boosts are not uniform. AAm is the highest boost and a >172 AAm is quite rare. In fact, in your analysis, the one URM to get in at H is indeed a black male...

So do you think the URM's that got dinged in the above picture were MA's?

I only dug as far as H, but one ding was NA and the other was Hispanic, not necessarily MA. Nothing is a guarantee (i.e. the "friend" could call JS a jerk in his interview or he could have C&F problems), but I'd bet real money on him getting into Harvard.

Now, is this dude the "top AAm candidate in this cycle"? I think not. There has to be a 3.8+/172+ AAm out there each time fretting over his Hammys and Darrows and such.
