Super long time lurker here. I'm applying for the fall cycle. advance thanks for giving me the advice.

I know i'm shut out of columbia so its either NYU or Penn ED. which would be safer? I really don't wanna sit out another cycle

- non-URM
- Top 5 undergrad B-sch
- not much softs

I really want nyu but if penn ED's safer i would just go ahead with that. Thoughts?

sry should have made it clear. I'm applying to enter year 2014. so sending in applications this coming Fall. not entering this Fall.

For this cycle? Is Penn's ED2 still going on?

See how this cycle goes for other people. You may not need to ED to get into either.

You should see how this cycle shakes out. I applied to NYU ED and got deferred (3.38/172), but I think most people with our LSAT and ~3.5 got in ED.

Edit: and I got into Penn RD but Penn is supposedly more random than NYU

wow is 3.5 the cutoff? i really feel like jumping off a roof now. LSN doesn't give me much of a sample pool and the results aren't convincing..

francesfarmer: rooting for you to get off the WL.

+1.

Why not just apply this cycle and see what happens? Then you have some actual results to base your decisions on for the next cycle.

RD to both, if you don't get in before Penn's ED2 deadline, switch your app to ED

this is really credited. i'm in a similar situation, you should see how this cycle goes. i think Crowing has similar numbers to yours check out his cycle.

Well its up to you. But if you get into Penn or NYU RD this year then you definitely don't have to ED next year. Makes your decision a lot easier. Then tell them at the end of the summer something came up and you have to put LS off another year.

Also, forgot about the ED2. You'll know if you got into NYU RD or not before that deadline, just apply super early.

thank you all for the advice!

but i know i won't be getting cash from these schools. if i have a shot at nyu ED why wouldn't i just make it a lock. I mean i can't go any higher in terms of sch rank.

the reason i worry about ED 2 is because NYU might have waitlist movement and i'm going to miss out on that. If next cycle is not as unpredictable as this one/if adcoms adjusted to new applicant numbers then i would definitely do ED 2 for penn to be safe.

Sounds like you really want NYU. I agree you have very little shot at money, but you will have another year of LSN data before you apply in September. Track people with similar numbers both on TLS/LSN and see what kind of money they are getting at CCNP. Then decide whether the extra chance of getting in via ED is worth giving up that amount.

See how the WL situation goes for NYU this year and base your decision off that. I wasn't waitlisted, just deferred, and I may get in anyway, so you might not need to ED to either. Next cycle could be as distastrous (meaning awesome for us) as this one so you could be a hot commodity next year even compared to this year.

Sorry for the misunderstanding! I'm just slightly scared next cycle people are gonna see the extreme fall in application numbers and start applying en masse again.

Being as there are still tons of unemployed lawyers and tuition isn't going down, I don't think that's likely. But maybe I'm overestimating the general public's decision making skills.

edit because grammar

Columbia may not be much of a reach with those numbers next year.

no disrespect intended. but not sure if really true or bullshitting...columbia seems to only take 175+ with gpa below 3.5s.

"Past Performance is Not Indicative of Future Results"

I said by next cycle. 172/3.55s got in last cycle, and things are getting easier.

it seems like this cycle is supposed to be easier, but people like francesfarmer and crowing are still not getting nyu (yet), is it because schools are waiting for the wait list to see how it goes? I think its this uncertainty that's really puzzling.

Also, columbia might decide to slim class sizes so to avoid dipping too far down the numbers. I think 3.4/172 is still almost impossible for columbia.

A few years ago a 3.4/172 was impossible for NYU. Things change. Can't guarantee what will happen, but I think the OP dismissed Columbia sooner than he should have.

OP should raise his gpa to 3.5 to be almost a lock at nyu. if 3.5/172 then definitely don't ED. but he ain't getting money anyways so what the hell.
