Ah, thanks. And for some reason Noodley, I still have the Nick Nolte avatar in my mind as you (I think that was yours).

Penn, Berk & UCLA are going to be tough as hell too (since Cali schools seem to favor the GPA). I realize this. Between ED UVA, Penn, Mich, Duke, NW...I think there's certainly a chance at a T14. I've never given myself much more than a haymaker's chance above UVA. I think all I've said squarely fits with "your gpa is most likely going to prevent you from going to the majority of schools you mentioned."

People post without reading the OP. I would be absolutely shocked if you didn't get at least 3-4 T14 acceptances. You are the type of person that law schools make exceptions for. Good luck!

And I think you have nothing to lose applying ED to UVA.

Salute, sir (although I etsed)

Like everyone else said, EDing to your first choice sounds like the best idea. You have same LSAT score as I do, but I had 3.8 GPA.... so that GPA is going to kill you. But with your long yrs of service and experience, plus law school applications going down, schools who want their median above 170 will take you, mostly T7~T14 schools. ED to your top choice among Columbia, NYU, UVA, Penn, Mich, Duke, NWtern, and be ready to RD everywhere else. As long as the no. of applications go down, I think you have decent chance of getting into at least few of T-14s.

What does your career goal look like? Assuming you're at least O-3 or above, unless you get to biglaw, you will most likely be making less money.... I don't know what your goal is, but finishing up the last 8 and going to law school sounds better to me (If I served that long, I only did 5 as enlisted)

I understand your reasoning of getting out. If that's the case, I support your decision. The only thing you need to find out is the legal market of Pacific Northwest. I assume you mean either Seattle or Portland. Otherwise, there wouldn't be biglaw in smaller cities. I don't know if there would be many big-law firms in this region because I've not heard people in this forum talking about big law there. I've only heard NYC, Chicago, DC, Boston, LA, SF, Atlanta, Austin, etc. I'm sure there's gotta be at least few big law firms though. But there's no guarantee that those firms will show up at your school's OCI.

Since you're limiting yourself to one specific geographical area which is not mega city, you might want to look at regional flagship schools too, for example, University of Washington or Oregon. Look for the firms that you ultimately want to get into and try to find out where they go for OCI. If they don't do OCI or select very few people from those state schools, go to T-14 which would give you national mobility in the end. With your resume, I'm sure you'll get into at least few lower T-14s.

Good luck sir!

Not sure if it matters to OP but the new Yellow Ribbon numbers came out with Columbia and NYU both increasing their amounts to $20k...essentially making admission into either a free ride with 9/11 Bill and YR. It may alter your decision to strictly ED to UVA based on $.

Yeah, I saw that Columbia and NYU are now 100% with YR plus-up. My decision to ED UVA is based less on money (because there are about 7 other T14 schools that would be free) and more on my GPA. If I try and roll the bones and ED Columbia or NYU, I think my chances with those institutions are <2%. Plus, according to the super spreadsheet and from what I can gather on their website, they preclude me from EDing anywhere else. Even if I could ED to UVA after making a play at one of those, my ED in late December/early January would (in my mind) have less of a shot than my ED on 1 Sep.

So, I think I'd be turning a 30-50% shot at UVA (with extremely early submission) into a 15-25% shot for the 1-2% chance of getting in at Columbia or NYU. Tough tight rope to walk!
I agree with you. CLS is definitely out with those numbers. They won't need a 173 that badly. NYU is doing some crazy shit to hold their median but I doubt they'd go below 3.0. UVA is a better bet

Off topic question: How in the bloody hell do I change the title of a thread I created? It's not for this one...just curious. Also, is that option available for anon threads?

*Edit - I figured it out. Just edit the subject in the first post...makes sense!

Relying on the Yellow Ribbon has been making me a little nervous of late. I have yet to apply, but it seems like a number of schools have YR programs that cover 100% but only allow a tiny number of participants.

I created a spreadsheet and put it in the veterans thread here: http://www.top-law-schools.com/forums/v ... &start=600

Out of the top 50 schools, six of the YR participant schools have less than 10 slots, seven have exactly 10 slots and rest have over 10. I don't know the makeup of entering classes, but I wonder how many schools have >10 veterans that are 100% GI Bill eligible (and thus eligible for YRP).

Of note, 13 schools have unlimited slots and 7 of those are in the T14.

craigsan, I'm in the same boat as you - I'll be trying to distance myself from a 20-year old uGPA, but I have a 3.9 in my master's, and 20 years in the military, with both officer and enlisted time.

Remember that extreme non-trads are underrepresented both here and on LSN. Also, there are a lot of non-trads who might not even apply to T14 schools, so we'll never know if they would have "outperformed their numbers".

Take someone who doesn't live near a T14, and they've got a working spouse, kids they don't want to pull out of high school, a house they can't sell because they're underwater on the mortgage, or strong ties to the community. They may go straight for a strong local regional school rather than even trying for higher-ranked schools. Or perhaps they already have a job and just need the JD "piece of paper" for a promotion/transfer. In that case, the ranking of the school isn't as important.

That's a great spreadsheet, thanks for that.

I'm looking at west coast schools, and have kind of started looking at better schools than I originally intended. I'm looking at UCLA for now and was considering just changing my state residency to California since I've lived here for 3 years now and I'm engaged to a California girl. The state residency would eliminate the need to rely on the YR program completely if I went to a UC school.

I'll be watching your thread closely because we have relatively similar cases.
