Top Law Schools

Hey guys, I was just wondering what my chances were with a score between 170-180. I've been studying my ass off and I've scored in the 170s in the free tests + am doing really well on the practice tests. Do I have a chance at the top tier? As always there were mitigating circumstances, dad came down with alzheimer's, passed away, depression. I got my grades somewhat back on track towards the end. I would like to know universities I should apply to and if I stand a chance at financial aid/partial ride if I do really well on the LSAT, despite the low gpa.

probably out at T14. Maybe NU if you kill it. But you haven't taken the test yet so who knows.

It depends what score you get in between 170 and 180.

That being said, if you get around a 173-176, you have a small chance at Northwestern and Georgetown. There's also a chance that you would get waitlisted at UVA and then accepted if they need to bump up their LSAT median.

Past the T14, you have a shot at Vanderbilt, George Washington, WashU @ St. Louis, and others as you get down the list.

No chance at UCLA, unfortunately. The Cali schools are all big on high GPAs.

WUSTL is one of the friendliest to splitters. If you score in the 170s, you're essentially a lock for WUSTL, regardless of your GPA.

Something that could help you be more attractive to schools and mitigate your GPA is substantive or full-time work experience; Northwestern especially loves WE. Otherwise, study hard for the LSAT and be ready to either retake or not go to law school if you get lower than a 169/170.

Have you already graduated and are now looking for work? If so, you'll have enough work experience for Northwestern when you apply next cycle. If you haven't graduated, get straight A's and move that GPA up a bit.

You need to have 1-2 years of paid work experience to be considered for Northwestern.

I would highly recommend work experience for you considering your situation because you get a chance to distance yourself from your GPA a bit and it makes any GPA addendum more persuasive.

I'm 2.6/172, so feel free to use my current cycle as a test balloon. I do have 4+ years of WE, though, so I'm hoping that'll play a role. Still waiting on my four T14 apps (which include GULC and NU).
