Hello! I was wondering what my chances would be like to get into a T20 school. My cumulative GPA is a 3.6 (college credit in high school + community college + university). My university GPA is 3.9 from Texas Tech University #165...major is Finance. LSAT score: 177. Thanks!!!

My school of choice is University of Texas at Austin...ranks #16. What are my chances of getting in? and Scholarships??

they're saying you have a chance at Harvard, Yale and Stanford.
If those numbers are real, you should be able to get into a better school than Texas

LOL yes, my numbers are legitimate. I feel like I can't just compete with numbers though; extracurriculars are just work, volunteering, and a member in a few organizations. I never held any leadership positions or anything extravagant and I know, particularly Stanford, look for those "softs".

Also, I don't want to live in NYC. Maybe California, but I prefer staying in Texas. Its home and if I can get a really good scholarship or full ride then its worth it. Besides, I doubt I could get a scholarship at Stanford or any of the T5, and I really do not want to graduate law school with 150K+ in debt.

The majority of on-topic posts these days are just trolls.

Username + join date + silly posts = troll

Not even a very good one. I remember back in my day...

I love how the date that I joined and my username makes people think this is a "troll". I've been reading posts in this forum for a long time and thought it would be OK to ask a simple question, especially since other questions are absolutely hideous and they still get respectful answers.

You will get into UT. Your numbers are such where extra curriculars won't matter a bit and they rarely do one way or the other anyway....

Thank you JCFindley for answering my question and NOT judging me based on my name or sign-up date.
I've read several law school books, one by susan estrich and how to get into a top law school....don't remember the author but its a really thick book and it really intimidates me. I just find it hard to believe when I'm competing with people who went to undergrad schools better than Texas Tech, that I'd actually stand a chance at a T5. But anyways, UT is my school of choice and I appreciate the response. I hope I have some potential for scholarships.

I never assume troll unless it really is obvious. Even if you were one why would giving a real answer be any skin off my nose and it doesn't take any longer than giving a snarky one.

When it comes down to it, law schools really don't care much about whether you went to Texas Tech, Harvard, MIT or the University of Guam. They also don't really care much if your degree was in applied mathematics/physics or if it was in restaurant management. They care mostly about the GPA and your LSAT because that is what they report up for the rankings. Yes, SOME softs can actually matter but think substantial and impressive WE or Olympic Medal type softs to really make a difference beyond your numbers.

You should do just fine at UT.

You should apply to Texas, as well as the top 6 schools.
If you can get into Harvard, Yale or Stanford, go there.
Otherwise, use your acceptance at Columbia/Chicago/NYU as leverage to get more scholarship out out UT (scholarships are negotiable)

As an aside, if either of CCN gives you a free ride, you should probably take it

If I were to get into Stanford, is the debt really worth it?

You've said you have been reading posts in this forum for a while, I think you can answer this yourself.

But since I am now under the impression that you haven't done the research that you claim to have done, I would say that it is per TLS wisdom that sticker at HYS is credited if you are admitted.

Almost always.

What are your goals?

I know someone who went to UVA and is having a hard time finding a job....thats a highly ranked school and to think it never happens with any of the other highly ranked schools is unrealistic.
