153 LSAT/3.91 GPA

Post by Steven Perry » Fri Dec 02, 2011 3:01 am

I had always hoped I wouldn't be in a splitter situation, but alas this is where I find myself. I'm an Ohio resident and am really hoping for Cincinnati, Case Western, or OSU, but I'm already in at Akron for safety purposes (with an $18000 grant). I'm a first generation college student from a low-income family, and I've spent the last few years in Appalachia for undergrad (Psychology). I've got a pretty strong personal statement, and some average softs (Pre-Legal Society, founder and former VP of a Libertarian student group, Psi Chi, etc). What do you think of my chances? Any other suggestions on where to apply?

OSU
Case Western (an uncle went there for undergrad and his MBA)
U Cincinnati
Northeastern
U Pittsburgh
Washington & Lee
Minnesota - Twin Cities

Did retake, got the same score, and I can't afford to take a year off. Retake aside, thoughts?

Can't afford to retake? This does not compute. You'll lose tens if not hundreds of thousands of dollars in lost scholarship opportunities and lower possible salary if you go to a school you can get into with a 153.

By the time I retake, get the results back, and possibly apply with what I hope would be a new score, it will be very late in the admission cycle and my chances might be worse than they are now. I'm just asking on opinions as to my chances on the listed schools. I've had the year-off/retake discussion before.

OP doesn't want to retake, so what are his odds?

Sorry, I don't have any insight, but I think your GPA is above the 75th at all schools. I have a 158/3.42 (will be 3.5) and applied to basically the same schools.

Good luck, sorry I can't help more.

It is better to wait a year and go to a top 14 school than apply now and go to a tier 2. Do what you need to do to score 160+. If you cannot accomplish that, consider another professional field to go into - your GPA is excellent and should not be wasted on a mediocre school. Sorry to be a total jerk about it.

The benefit of retaking and getting into an actually GOOD school far, far, FAR outweighs the cost of taking the year off.

I mean, unless you're planning on making six figures this year.

If I had your GPA, I'd be going to Stanford or Columbia (or at least I'd have a hell of a shot). Don't be stubborn.
