You're in, you have an eleven point spread between takes, an addendum will cover this easily, unless you have some other unusual circumstances.

I can't see them denying you at H. Y & S are a more black box, but if you want HLS I would guess you've got it.

you're almost an auto-admit. Maybe they would prefer no retake jump, but given the falling applicant pool, I don't think you need to worry. Just submit a reasonable addendum.

OK look, if the spread between your two tests was say 5 points or less, the odds would be that they may average, but you took an eleven point leap between the June and Oct test.
An addendum will easily explain this huge jump, you had gas, upset stomach, your puppy died...yadda yadda and with your GPA, why are you sweating this? Your GPA is much more representative of the higher LSAT score, it's a done deal.
Can you carry on a coherent conversation for 3-8 minutes? Can you fill out applications without typo's, errors? If so, go celebrate and congratulations.

Badass numbers, I think you're good to go. Enjoy Harvard!

I have similar numbers and am in a similar situation (GPA slightly lower, 167+175). After posting in another thread, the general consensus seemed to be that writing an addendum would be idiotic. What gives?

Schools don't give a shit about your initial score. They take the highest score because USNWR only takes the highest score. Basically you're a 4.05/177, just write an addendum about the increase.

Jeez, even if they averaged I'd think a 4.05 and a 171.5 would still put you in the convo for Harvard.
Don't sweat it. You'll be good.

haha that's the second reason: if they do average and make me a 4.05/172 candidate, what are the "chances"?

Accordingly, I wanted to know whether -- based on the vast knowledge + experience of ppl on this forum -- it's been the case that Harvard seems to use averages or just look at the highest score.
I'm starting to question your reading comprehension skillz.

haha. i mean, there is more behind the "comprehension" than the line above. for example, a lot of threads/forums/sites list Harvard as a school that "averages."

People who have 4.05 GPA and 177 LSAT and post "what are my chances" threads make me want to kill kittens. Honestly, WTF do you think your chances are?
So jealous.

I'll just say that the thread title is sexy. 4.05 with a 177?
That would be a lot of fun!

Are you serious. $5 says you're going to be the gunner of your class, wherever you end up.
Look at that flowchart. Read through it with a 4.05/172 in mind. Are you suddenly a splitter? Have you suddenly become a URM? Do you suddenly have amazing softs? No? Why would you suddenly not be able to find the answer to your question on LSN.com then? Either you're really f-ing lazy and don't want to do a simple search on a website to find the info yourself, or you're perfectly aware of your chances and just want an ego stroke.
