Yale Employee - sub 3 GPA, 169 LSAT Fordham GWU Illinois...

Employed @ Yale past two years (not inclined to say what I've been doing but it isn't just clerical nor is it teaching - I will say it's a leadership position), non-Yale undergrad, <3.0 GPA (2.72), 169 LSAT. You might consider my work experience a very good soft more than anything else.

UG: Extracurricular activities, student government, volunteer/community service hours, awful GPA (drank myself silly the first year, slowly recovered after changing majors and adjusting to adult life), athlete tutoring, summer office work.

CHANCES @:

WUSTL
GWU
Illinois
W&M
Fordham

Where should I apply this September?
Retake to get to a 172+ and shoot for Northwestern is your best bet. A 2.72 / 169 will probably lock you out of the T14 and much of the T50

Top 30. WUSTL is your best shot at T20. Probably no T14...if your employment was post undergrad (1+ yrs), then ED NU. Otherwise ED at UVa and hope for the best.

If you are keen on T14, retake your LSAT.

Yes, undergrad work experience: tutoring during school year, office work during summers.

I was thinking WUSTL, Illinois, Fordham, GWU, and W&M. Can you, or anyone, lend some insight into my chances at those schools specifically?

I sense a big ten state school in your future.

Illinois seems to be cutting back on splitters (according to LSN).

This thread leads me to believe that you will be disappointed in how working at YALE affects your cycle.

Indiana though has been giving them near full rides, and Minnesota & Iowa still seem good though right?

Iowa? Indiana? Shit, I don't want to go to law school that bad.

I hear life in the Twin Cities isn't bad.

Got any room in your LSAT score to improve? Like someone else said you got a chance at NU if you get above 170. Though who knows if that will continue under a new Dean.

I think I maxed out (took a few old exams after getting my score back - Dec. 2010 - and only did 1-2 pts better than on the live one).

WUSTL will let you in as long as you show some modicum of interest. Visit, talk to admissions dean, seem concerned about getting in due to your UG grades, talk about how much you like the school, etc. You don't need to do that, but it'd make it pretty close to 100%. You might get a decent scholarship out of it too; the display of interest might help there but I can't say for sure.

WUSTL is probably your best bet, maybe followed by GW.

I have better numbers than you (on top of me being a URM) and I got waitlisted by Illinois/Fordham.

I had a similar GPA and a 167. I applied to most of those schools and the only school to outright reject me was UIUC. I'd also say that with your current stats, WUSTL is your best bet.

If you had better numbers than him and got waitlisted by Illinois/Fordham, you either put together a bad application package or you are misinterpreting what URM includes.

My GPA was only marginally better (that was the problem).

What is an application "package"?

He means PS/resume/DS/addenda/etc (all the supplemental stuff other than your LSAT/GPA). The point is to make them at least decent and hopefully tie them all together so it looks like you have a coherent and focused application package.

WUSTL, maybe W&M or UIUC. No shot at GWU or Fordham. IU-B for free as well.

Being a janitor at Yale would probably make for a great PS. Just make sure and play up the Good Will Hunting angle.
