not sure how this will hurt me...

When I was a freshman, I failed a one credit class, and struggled in some of my other classes, mostly because I was distracted by the death of my grandfather during that semester. Since then, I have been able to bring my GPA back up to a 3.85, but will that one bad semester hurt me, even if I explain what had happened?

yes it will hurt your LSAC GPA. yes you should still write addendum explaining it to soften the blow.

It will hurt in comparison to the 3.95 or whatever that you have since then. But a 3.85 overall is going to be above median for about every school outside of HYS

It may raise an eye, but an addendum should suffice.
A 3.85 is really solid - it won't hurt very much if at all.
