170 LSAT

Pretty good softs.

What does it look like for me if I ED to SMU in the next cycle? I am worried that I may be shooting a little low. My dream would be Vandy, but I realize the futility of applying. Perhaps W&L or Texas?

Here's an idea: don't ED, apply widely, negotiate up a scholarship at SMU, profit.

Nope, the apply widely was a good idea. OP can apply to SMU ED (highly recommended since they are slower than an arthritic turtle on Quaalude's), and not be bound to go. But he's likely to get good money from them as they favor LSAT.

Indiana might offer you $120,000 scholarship over 3 years. Iowa is another law school to consider for scholarship money.

I would say more of a 3.4 non-urm floor, but the point stands.

No reason not to do ED at SMU, but definitely apply to some of the splitter friendly schools. As mentioned, Indiana would likely give you money, and Northwestern would consider you. By all means, still apply to Texas as well... you never know.

OP, are you focusing on the South? If so, that makes a difference. I would think Emory might be a good option for in that scenario.

ALSO: Why not take a flier at Vandy? It looks like they're mostly waitlisting people in your range. Why not put in a flyer on the outside chance you get WL --> A.

Yes, most definitely staying in the South. I've thought about Emory and UGA...but didnt really know how that would carry to TX.

It claims 12% for Southwest. I'm guessing the bulk of that is in Texas. Given the proximity of Louisiana to Texas, that makes sense.

I'd still look at Emory, though it looks to have limited reach to Texas. (Though a portion of this could be self-selection).

All that being said, Texas is a strange beast in a lot of ways. The legal market is no exception. Texas has exceptional preference for its local law schools, so if you're dead set on Texas, I'd take SMU over Tulane and Emory. Not sure about Vanderbilt, but probably even over Vanderbilt.

SMU > Tulane for Texas, unless you are talking bordering on Louisiana.

Thats the thing, I will be working in Texas, and most likely in the DFW area.

Even though I could shoot higher, I'm not sure that it would pay dividends in the long run. (On the assumption that I wouldnt have a chance to get into the T14...)

Yeah, I'm good with that. You could probably snag a few T1 full rides, but I don't think it'd do you any good in Texas. Maybe send something Northwestern's way. Outside of that, I'd look exclusively at SMU, Texas and Vanderbilt. Maybe send apps to Tulane and a few other Texas schools as safeties.

SMU gives amazing scholarships to splitters.

Apply ED if it isn't binding. But also apply to Gtown, northwestern and michigan.

Shoot for something better but SMU is a pretty nice place to end up
