Top Law Schools

I am looking at both Columbia and NYU. I will be applying next year early. Do I have a shot at Columbia with an ED? If not I am definitely leaning toward throwing an ED at NYU. Does NYU warrant the ED or should I apply RD to leave myself the option for a lower T-14 school? Any help is very much appreciated

i would not ED at either. you are at median gpa wise and above median LSAT wise. they don't average as much anymore either.

Assuming you have moderate/good softs, I'd say you're in at both no problem.

Thanks for responses. My softs are weak. Also I don't think I have a chance at HYS so wouldn't an ED be warranted as a precaution if nothing else?

You should only ED if you'd choose the school regardless other offers you'd expect from lower-ranked schools.

I would ED to your favorite of the two. (Hint: NYU will be easier to swing and would be the better choice if you're into PI/Gov. For BigLaw, Columbia is tough to beat and has more national reach.)

With an LSAT increase of less than 5-6, I believe that both Columbia and NYU still average. If so, then you're looking at a 3.7/171.5, which is slightly below both medians at both schools. Check LSN (as well as the 2011 applicant threads for both schools) for the prevalence of averaging. I remember one guy who was deferred after ED'ing to NYU with a 170 (on a retake) and a 3.9, whereas I was accepted with a 170 (single score) and a 3.75.

Edit: Depending on your financial situation (and especially if you won't be needing LRAP), taking the money from MVP may be a decent option since that tier does not average. For scholarship purposes, they will treat you like a 173/3.7 (which may be good enough for a half scholarship at Michigan, for instance).
