Top Law Schools

Hey guys, my first post here. in the interest of getting the best feedback, i'll provide as much information as i'm comfortable with:

UG - BS Civil Engineering - undisclosed - 3.80 GPA
Grad - MS Structural Eng - Stanford University - 3.64 GPA

I have about 2 yrs of work experience now. I dont really like my industry and im currently thinking about law.

For this change to work, im targeting the top schools (effort,time,debt would be wasted otherwise imo)

So what LSAT score do i need for Stanford/Yale and similar schools in that upper tier?

I'd say roughly 172 to have a shot and mid-170's to start looking pretty.

Honestly, you're not going to get a good answer for that question. You should do as well as you possibly can. But yale and stanford are pretty notorious for rejecting people with outstanding numbers. Just do as well as you can, but to be considered there you should be in the mid 170's.

thanks, i appreciate the honesty. I will of course aim to do the best i can. I figured i'd throw in my engineering background to see if that changes anything. I figured a higher gpa in engineering would mean more than someone that completed a liberal arts degree

Not really by that much, though Stanford does like engineers from what I hear.

Do schools show any preference towards their alumnis? Since law schools are hyper competitive, im going to guess no, but who knows. Maybe they'll give me a little leeway since I've attended previously.

Most evidence points to no, so I wouldn't bank on it. That being said I have heard of it happening but not at a school as high as Stanford.

Stanford and Yale both are fairly unpredictable. But, with a 174 you are sitting pretty for Harvard, who is known to be more predictable based on numbers.

I know someone who had straight As at Stanford, 170 LSAT, SLS jerked him around for six months; he decided to go to Harvard instead. Stanford is quirky.
