I have strong softs (Thesis, independent legal research, legal clinic experience) at a T-20 ugrad. Non-URM, taking at least a year off to work before I send in my apps. HYS pretty much a pipe dream, but I REALLY like Michigan and Berkeley. Thoughts?

You will get into Michigan with some decent money too:

You will not get into Berkeley with that GPA, but thats okay because the Michigan option is better anyways.
You can have any of CCN with an ED i would imagine, and maybe NYU without it (i dont know how they view multiple LSAT's)
HYS dont look so good, but i would apply anyways lol

Thanks!
Also, would it mitigate my lower GPA if I transferred after Freshman year and have had a positive grade trend (with one minor exception) since then?

Please don't quote this, I might be deleting this info soon.
I had similar numbers last year: 3.56 / 163, 166, 174. Not really any strong softs. Undergrad that no one has heard of and an MA.
My results:
Columbia- wl'd
Chicago- wl'd
NYU- wl'd
Berkeley- rejected
M-wl'd
V- accepted w/ 20k/yr
P- held, no why P written-->rejected
N- accepted
D- wl'd
MVP is always hard to predict, but if you get accepted you should have a good shot at some good money. You also should have a good shot at Chicago (esp with good undergrad and softs), NYU (depending on how they treat the 2 scores), and a decent shot at Columbia.
Good luck.

Not really. It's better than a stagnant GPA or a declining one, but upward trends are a marginal soft at best. I had a pretty drastic one from my second semester of sophomore year on and I don't think it had too much of an effect.

They dont care, they care about what they can report
