3.74/172 engineer

I applied ED to Columbia because that's where my heart's set on going, but after reading through how tough it is, I'm thinking of blanketing the t14.

I'm an engineer, with patents, publications, and a master's degree. I have 2 years of engineering WE at a large biotech company and was the student body President at a large public university during UG. Are these considered average softs or will they set me apart in any way?

Is it worth spending the hundreds of dollars applying everywhere, because I'd really like to go to CLS.

I would think you have a decent shot via ED.

Average softs, but I think you should get into Columbia ED, or else at least Chicago and/or NYU.

Similar stats and got CLS w/o ED (applied last year). You should be pretty set.

That being said, you should apply to one or two safeties. As poster above said, NYU and Chicago would be great.

Apply to MVP and a few others at t14 for safeties.

You should be in good shape, especially with that awesome engineering GPA and those softs to round it out (IP!) With your numbers (which are similar to mine) you should already have fee waivers from NYU, Penn, and Michigan hidden, so those apps should be free when you go to pay. If not, call...and check your CRS to make sure you're getting fee waivers/that you checked the "recieve info box". Because you should have had one for Columbia already too.

Your numbers are good. You shouldn't have applied ED to CLS in my opinion, because I think you could have gotten in and maybe a little cash at Michigan, Boalt, Penn, and in to NYU & Chicago at the very least. If you get the fee waivers, you should only have to pay for Boalt & Chicago. Finally, see if you can get a feewaiver for northwestern. You have perfect numbers for them, perfect background, and this would make an EXCELLENT safety for you.

So basically, I think you should apply to CCNMBPN. With the fee waivers you SHOULD receive, this should cost you approximately 200 dollars more, TOPS. Not a big price to pay for security should CLS fall through.

Thanks for the advice everybody! I applied to CLS really early on, so I have no idea if I got a hidden waiver. I'll check some of the other ones though.

I might be in the minority, but I would call your softs above average. I agree with everything mst said though.

You are one of the few people with truly noteworthy softs. I think you got CLS.

I honestly think that if someone said they'd won the Nobel for literature, TLS posters would say it's one of the "lesser" Nobels and just an average soft.

Good luck with your cycle, OP.

Can't really leverage much ED.

But yeah, I think you'll get in, but definitely throw a few apps out for backups!

Hahaha yeah, that's totally true. Man, TLS is a rough crowd.

It is a study in crowd dynamics and group think. Almost no one on here actually knows what are good softs and which aren't, but because they see other people saying things...

I think you have a legitimate (though not great) shot at YHS. Great softs.

edit: I should correct myself. Your softs aren't "great," but they're above average for sure.

Thanks, I threw in an application to H and S, but I'm not going to hold my breath.
