But obviously I'm doing it anyway.
3.8/172, finishing 2nd year w/ Teach for America (other average softs: internship in US Senate, etc)
Chances at Stanford? They say it's a "black box" which is why I'm asking rather than using predictor sites, so please don't refer me to them- I've seen 'em all!

With that GPA and LSAT, plus TFA (which seems to be about the only soft people care about) you're as good a candidate for Stanford as I've seen, other than those with higher LSAT/GPA combos. Which is to say, not very many people. Then again, you've acknowledged it's a black box. Are you already planning on applying?
If yes, good luck. I don't know you're an auto-admit, but I definitely don't think you're an auto-reject.
If no, see above.

Not bad, but keep in mind that as a small school Stanford is going to want class diversity. There were almost 4,000 TFA participants your year, most of whom have high GPAs from top universities. No question that there will be other competitive TFA applicants to Stanford with similar qualifications, so you will need to differentiate yourself.
All of that said, Stanford loves high GPAs and public service commitment, so you are good fit overall.

means admissions is very unpredictable - apps come in, decisions come out without any predictable basis

Without a prestigious UG or other impressive soft, I'd say out due to the low GPA.
