I've visited New York City a few times, and each time I've felt like I would love it if I just had friends and a home there rather than a hotel room. So Columbia and NYU are pretty high up.
I'm not sure if I'd like the NYU or Columbia area more, but I'm a pretty insular person so environment doesn't affect me too much. I have no problem walking long distances to get places. Is ED at NYU a significant enough admissions bump to be worth it?
My softs, LOR, etc are decent, but nothing to write home about.

You need to ED. Most of the folks getting into NYU last cycle with a 174 had 3.55+, and applied about month ago last cycle. For CLS and UofC, harder still. See LSN.

You need to ED to NYU, too risky otherwise with your GPA.
