3.74/161: UNC? Wake Forest?

Hello everyone,

I would like to thank you in advance for any responses. I appreciate anything that goes beyond "retake" and "check LSN and LSP". I have already checked LSN and LSP, and I am not sure if I will be able to retake because I will be PCSing at the time.

As you can see, I'm a 3.74/161 (non URM) and I would like to know how you guys feel about my softs impacting my applications to UNC and Wake Forest. I am NOT a NC resident which does not help my app to UNC, but I will be moving there after I leave Active Duty to live with my husband who will be stationed there.

My PS has been described by objective third parties as powerful and memorable.

I got my degree in International Affairs from GW.

My softs:
Academic honors
- Four year ROTC scholarship
- Presidential Scholarship
- Dean's List every semester
- Rhodes, Mitchell, and Marshall finalist
I spent a year at the Pentagon (while in college)
- Speechwriter for Secretary Rumsfeld
- Defense Department Advisory Committee on Women in the Services (DACOWITS)
I worked in two DC think tanks (while in college)
- Foreign and Defense Policy at AEI
- The Iraq Project at Institute for the Study of War
I am a Naval Officer transitioning to the Reserves as an Intelligence Officer
- Former jet pilot (one of the first generation of female jet pilots)
Other stuff
- 6 years as an EMT and CPR instructor in NJ and DC
- TS clearance
- Model UN nerd and was in the Vagina Monologues (yeah, I'm cool)
- marathon runner and rock climber

I hope you all have a safe and happy Halloween! :)

I honestly think you're in at both. UNC is hard to predict because of the in-state, oos thing, but yeah as I said I would wager you to be accepted into both. Good luck.

Probably in at Wake. UNC probably WL. Retake would be an excellent idea. Even if you do get in, you'll probably have to pay sticker, which is probably not a great financial decision.

UNC's graph sketchy bc they WL people with fabulous #s.

The 2 reasons IMO are the obvious in-state resident preference.
Second (but not as strong as the first) is I think they really do take a holistic approach to their applicants. The more I've spoken with adcomms, the more they emphasize that they really want genuine individuals... and they look for public service and all that.

I think on any given sunday, a person within their # ranges could get in if they make a compelling argument for themselves as an applicant. OP has a lot of softs working in his/her favor.

LOL.

What else are they going to tell you? "We don't give a shit what you've done, only what you can do for our USNWR ranking"?

when I asked about increasing my schlys last year the two schools I was deciding between (Tulane and wake) both told me flat out that the schly was 100% based on LSAT/GPA. I appreciated the honesty.

Yeah. I've also had adcomms tell me their admissions decisions were almost solely LSAT/GPA (read:Colorado, etc). I don't think they are just shooting hot air.

I hope y'all are right...but I say out at UNC. I have a 161/3.4 and my adviser loled at me and said I'd need a 165 for UNC if I wasn't an NC resident. I know your GPA's tons better, but 161 seems a little low for UNC unless URM or instate. Really, really hope I'm wrong though.

Probably in at Wake though, waitlist/in at the very least.

Not a dime. But, I loved Wake a lot. I'll probably end up there or Colorado unless my December retake kills it. Wake's cut off for schollys looks like about 163/164

Wake at sticker is an objectively terrible idea.

OP is not enough of a splitter to any of those. I was a 3.73/163 and was WL at bc/bu/fordhamPT.

Thank you for the input...

I have a dumb question: Will they still seriously look at my application with the 161 if it says I am taking the December test as well? This might just be wishful thinking, but I hope they see that I was obviously not satisfied with my October score and plan on jumping a couple points on the December test...

Maybe? Hopefully? This is a little nerve wracking...

If I recall, for wake last year, schollies based solely on lsat score. Pretty sure there was a cutoff at 163. LSN could confirm or deny this, but definitly when I applied last year, I did not not hear of anyone with under a 163 getting a scholly. (and I talked to a lot of people about it- I now go to wake)

Im pretty sure that you won't get a scholarship. However, to balance out all those people with high lsats/low gpas (like me!) who they are giving schollies too, they will probably take you because of your high gpa.

If you retake and get two points higher, I could easily see you getting between 10-18k off a year.

I think if your out of state for UNC, you are screwed. THats my opinoin though.

My solution- Apply to wake now- you will get in. Retake, get a 163. Notify them of it. Use it as leverage to bump you and give you a scholly.

Also important- have a competing offer. They act tough toward giving schollies/increasing schollies- they ignore your calls/emails etc. But as soon as you mention a competing offer or an interest in somewhere else, then they get down to business.

You blow me away. /bow.

Good luck on your cycle! Why didn't you even try to apply to BC and BU?
