canes wrote:Just got my October LSAT score and it is well below my PT average, which was about 170/1 going in... I'm a Cuban-American guy with a 3.96 GPA at the University of Miami with a political science major and a philosophy minor. I could not be more disappointed with myself right now, because I know I could have done better. I'm wondering if I should retake; it would be my third time taking it, as I canceled in June. My softs are average. I did a 3 month internship with a congressman, some volunteer work in the city, and some involvement in like 3 clubs on campus.

That said, what do you guys think my chances are at NYU doing early decision? Also, Georgetown? Should I retake the LSAT? Not do ED at either? Feel free to add any other predictions for the rest of the T-14.

Edit: I'm graduating this upcoming May.
You do realize you're not really considered a URM, right?

Yale does not ask. H/S/Duke ask if you are Hispanic or Latino. Every other T14 either provide Cuban or ask to specify "other".

Like a lot of others asking the question, Penn/Mich is tough, UVA is a good shot, for ED. You could ED PM, hear back, then fire one off to UVA.

this is odd. I have a 3.87 with a 165 and I'm a URM (Mexican), but I posted a chances thread and people seemed more confident with my numbers even with a GPA lower than yours. I feel like UVA and UPenn aren't unreasonable

do exactly what the guy above said. ED at mich or penn. if rejected send an ED to virginia. REAL GOOD chance at UVA and decent chances at mich and penn.

Hispanics effectively get about a 5 point boost on the LSAT, so your stats are essentially 170/4.03. So, you have very good chances at CCN and decent chances at HYS (though, depending on your ECs, you might have better chances). ED at NYU seems like a good choice, but you could probably get into Columbia instead.

Should I save a late December ED to Georgetown or UVA in the case of a NYU rejection/waitlist? Or just send all my apps out ASAP?
Send out your apps now. You can switch the UVa app to ED at any point before they give you a decision. May want to hold on GULC app because I don't think you can switch, but call and ask if it is possible.

If you don't end up where you want I would definitely consider retaking and reapplying.

In response to the original discussion, you will likely not be fully URM boosted (though may receive a small boost b/c of Hispanic/Latin@ but not as much as PR/MX). I think this because LSAC allows you to fill out their ethnicity question and have it sent to law schools (where Hispanic is subdivided) and the fact that choosing "other" on an app isn't going to get a white person boosted just because they didn't specify that they weren't AA/NA/etc. Also NYU specifically asks something like "what under represented groups do you belong to?" which is a separate question from their ethnicity question.

If you have a shot for 170+ I would definitely not settle for just any T14 with a 4.0+ considering you could be looking at the T6 or lower T14 with $$. Look at it this way, you can hedge your bets by signing up and studying now for February or June of next year. Put your seat deposit down wherever you like and if your retake goes poorly then just go to the school you've deposited to. If your retake goes well, withdraw your seat deposit and reapply. This gives you the best of both worlds without having to play any sort of waiting game and the only sacrifice is time/money spent on the retake which is easily a minimal investment for a shot at more $ or a better school.
