Will help marginally as it is interesting, but a 170/4.0 is probably guaranteed admission at Penn anyway. Try your luck a little higher (Columbia, Chicago and NYU, at least, if not Harvard, Yale and Stanford).

My personal statement will perhaps look strange:
I am/was very successful in the music business. Wrote a few hits, been on the cover of Rolling Stone, musical guest on just about every late night TV show, MTV videos, the works, multi-platinum records in many countries…will be an older student.
I'm just clueless about how much of this is relevant, or perhaps even detrimental to my chances at good law schools. Any thoughts will be appreciated.
Law schools like people with interesting backgrounds... you will CERTAINLY get in at Penn, apply higher if you're interested, you have a good chance with those numbers.

If you're for real, its time to start guessing who you are.
Kidding, good luck.

For the love of God, why are you going to law school when you can play the cowbell for a living?
Seriously though, if I were an admission director at Penn, I'd ask myself: Why now and for what reason? If you can make a reasonable case or even a half-reasonable case, you're in.
PS. Middling numbers? Let's not fake the funk; modesty gets you no where on TLS.

If you are real:
Law schools love saying things like "Our incoming class has a former Olympian" or "Our incoming class has someone from the cover of Rolling Stone." I would say this is probably one of those softs that is a big deal. I would bet you have a good shot at schools higher than Penn (though if you want Penn for personal reasons then there is nothing wrong with going there).

Yale has someone who always opens doors for others.

i would also like to point out that even if this is a flame, it's refreshing to read a self-proclaimed "interesting background" that actually is interesting.

It's probably Annie Lennox. She said she wanted to study philosophy:
